Why you are soon going to see a Ford Ranger pickup on the highway almost every day

October 30, 2025

Rijkswaterstaat

You sometimes encounter them daily on the highway: those bright yellow pickups with flashing lights and the text “Rijkswaterstaat” on the side. Soon that will often be a Ford, because the brand may supply more than 200 examples of the Ranger XLT SuperCab to the road inspectors who stand ready day and night in case of breakdowns, accidents and traffic jams.

Ford Ranger

The first ten Rangers have now been delivered to Den Bosch, and that’s just the beginning. The rest will follow in the coming months, spread across locations throughout the country. Rijkswaterstaat chose Ford after a public tender. They looked critically at reliability, safety and maintenance costs. The price-quality ratio was ultimately the deciding factor.

Workforce

The Ranger chosen is no entry-level vehicle. It is the XLT SuperCab, equipped with a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine of 125 kW (170 hp) and 405 Nm of torque. That’s enough to tow 3,500 kilos and carry more than a ton of stuff in the cargo box. Additional space behind the front seats provides room for tools, pylons and anything else a road inspector might need on the road. The automatic transmission and all-wheel drive make it as easy to move across a berm as it is down the A12.

Specially equipped for work

The yellow Rangers are delivered through Ford Wassink, which is also responsible for the equipment. Each vehicle gets its own modifications, so that the equipment perfectly matches the work in the field. Think communication systems, warning lights and storage compartments for safety equipment.
