Spotted: Polaris RZR looks to go higher than Maserati

May 1, 2026

Polaris RZR

The Polaris RZR – often pronounced “Razor” – is a series of high-performance off-road vehicles designed and produced by American manufacturer Polaris Inc. The current generation, which received significant technological and exterior model updates between 2024 and 2026, is known worldwide as one of the most advanced and capable off-road vehicles on the market. The vehicle is the market leader in the category of so-called SSVs, a vehicle segment that has grown exponentially in popularity in recent years for both recreational use and professional desert racing.

What is an SSV?

The abbreviation SSV stands for Side-by-Side Vehicle. Sometimes the term UTV (Utility Task Vehicle or Utility Terrain Vehicle) is also used in a broader sense, although an RZR is built specifically for sport and recreation and not for agricultural work.

Unlike a traditional quad bike (ATV), in which the rider sits on a saddle and controls a handlebar like a motorcycle, an SSV has a setup more like a car. Driver and passenger(s) sit side by side (side-by-side) in sturdy bucket seats. The vehicle is operated by regular car steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals, and comes standard with a rugged steel roll cage (ROPS) and four- or five-point seat belts. This provides significantly more safety, keeping occupants well protected in the event of heavy impacts or possible rollovers on rough terrain.

Aggressive design

The current generation Polaris RZR is characterized by an extremely aggressive design, extreme suspension travel and advanced technology. Recent iterations feature new aerodynamic and functional elements, including patented vents on the hood. These direct driving wind directly into the cabin to significantly reduce the temperature for occupants. At the front, the vehicle is identified by the sharp, animated Fang Lighting, the distinctive LED lighting in the shape of tusks.

In the cabin, the higher versions use the Polaris Ride Command system. This infotainment system with a large central touchscreen offers not only audio control and vehicle telemetry, but also comprehensive off-road navigation. GPS allows drivers to track the positions of other riders in their group in real time, even without mobile coverage.

Different versions

The RZR lineup is very diverse and is built around track width and engine power. Almost every model is available in a two-seat or a longer four-seat variant (designated ‘4’). Current models include:

RZR Trail & Trail S: These are the most compact models. At only 50 to 60 inches (127 to 152 cm) wide, they are extremely maneuverable and specifically designed for narrow forest trails with width restrictions.

RZR XP: Completely revised in 2024 and designed as the ultimate, reliable all-rounder. Equipped with an 84 kW (114 hp) 1,000 cc engine, the XP offers an excellent balance of performance and durability. The line is available in Sport, Premium and Ultimate trims.

RZR Pro Series (Pro XP & Pro S): This is the step up to the more extreme. These models feature a 133 kW (181 hp) turbocharged engine and a significantly reinforced chassis. They are wider, have longer suspension travel and are built for aggressive handling at high speeds.

RZR Pro R: The absolute flagship of the brand. The Pro R changed the market by using a massive 2.0-liter four-cylinder ProStar Fury engine (naturally aspirated) that delivers an unprecedented 165 kW (225 hp). Combined with a massive 74-inch track width and the adaptive Dynamix DV suspension system, this is effectively a street-legal desert racer.
