Car sales in the Netherlands decline further in April 2026
First four months of 2026
This slight contraction is part of a broader trend. For the first four months of 2026, the total comes to 106,611 registrations. That is almost ten percent less than in the same period last year. Remarkable, because March still showed a modest plus. April thus pushes the annual total down again.
Market share
At the same time, the market is visibly shifting under the hood. Hybrid models now dominate, accounting for more than half of all registrations. With 13,562 units, the market share reaches 52.8 percent, a clear growth from last year. Fully electric cars follow with 9,616 registrations and a 37.4 percent share, also on the rise. Traditional fuels still play only a secondary role. Gasoline comes no further than 7.5 percent, while diesel and LPG together barely touch three percent.
Kia firmly in the lead
Looking at the brand rankings, Kia remains firmly in the lead with 2,660 registrations. Toyota and Volkswagen follow at an appropriate distance. Škoda and Renault complete the top five. Among models, the Škoda Elroq stands out in particular, calling itself the most popular car of the month with 686 registrations. This model also leads the list in the EV segment, followed by the Kia EV3 and the Toyota C-HR+.
Electrified powertrains
So despite this shift toward electrified powertrains, the market as a whole is not yet managing to maintain growth. Demand seems present, but lags behind previous years. With that, 2026 is taking a step backward for now, while the transition to electric and hybrid driving is accelerating.
