MG S9 PHEV: the starting price

To also start directly with the price: the new MG S9 PHEV has a starting price of 43,250 euros in the Netherlands. That price applies to the basic version, called Comfort. ‘Base version’ sounds a bit disrespectful in this case, because this SUV is already extremely rich in stuff as standard. Dual 12.3-inch displays, three-zone air conditioning, an 8-speaker audio system, 360-degree parking camera, a power tailgate, heated front seats, a panoramic roof with a sunroof that can be opened, ambient lighting and, of course, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You name it. It’s all there as standard. Even V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability.

MG S9 PHEV Premium

But you can also spend 45,900 euros: 3,000 euros more in other words. In that case, you get the keys to an MG S9 PHEV Premium. And that variant then has more special 20-inch alloy wheels, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, an electric four-way adjustable lumbar support for driver, a Bose audio system with 12 speakers and an induction charger. So an extraordinary amount of equipment, especially for the euros you invest. A Volkswagen Tayron, for example, already starts above 52,000 euros.

Dimensions

Another fun fact: that Tayron has a length of 4.79 meters. This MG S9 PHEV is even 4.98 meters long, a whopping 27 inches longer than the electric MG S6. Not a small boy, then, this S9. And not a light one, as it weighs 2,160 kilograms. The wheelbase of the S9 PHEV comes out to 2.92 meters versus 2.84 meters for the S6. The MG S9 PHEV is also longer and taller than the MG HS: it is 1.96 meters wide and 1.78 meters high. The MG S9 PHEV can tow up to 2,000 kilograms of braked weight.

Gigantic luggage space

So then an MG S9 PHEV like this also has a substantial luggage space? Definitely! Using all seven seats, 332 liters of luggage space remains behind the third row of seats. With the third row of seats folded down, 1,026 liters are available. If you fold down the second and third rows of seats, you even get 2,093 liters of luggage space. To make the interior as flexible as possible, the third row of seats can be folded down separately, while the second row of seats has a 60:40 split. Plenty of space, in other words. In terms of leg and headroom, there is no reason to complain either. Even taller people can sit excellently in this car.

Plug-in hybrid technology

The MG S9 PHEV uses plug-in hybrid technology. The system combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a 24.7 kWh battery that provides an electric range of 100 kilometers according to the WLTP test standard. So in practice, count on about 70 to 80 kilometers. This powertrain combines a 105 kW (143 hp) 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a 170 kW (231 hp) electric motor, a 24.7 kWh battery and front-wheel drive. System output is 220 kW (299 hp) with maximum torque of 390 Nm. Good for a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds. WLTP combined fuel consumption is 0.8 l/100 km. Note that in theory this is only achievable if you actually charge the battery. That can be done with 3-phase 11 kW. In addition, the car also has a 65-liter fuel tank.

How does the MG S9 PHEV drive?

So far, the MG S9 PHEV has very strong papers. It is relatively affordable – especially in this segment – and it offers plenty of space. In addition, this model is also very rich in stuff. But how does this car drive? Little reason to complain on that front as well, we can tell after covering the first test miles. This MG S9 is nice and comfortable and, above all, very quiet. Admittedly, it does lean over a bit when cornering, but that is also part of this type of car. It is long, high and then you get that effect automatically. In this S9 you want to drive from A to B in comfort and quiet. And that is perfectly possible. Whether you are behind the wheel or in the back.

High-gloss displays, mwah….

While driving, quite a few things also stand out. For example, MG has used displays with a high-gloss finish. That shines tremendously. You can even brush your teeth in it. The displays create some turmoil in the field of vision. MG would have been better off using a matte screen finish. The materials otherwise look fine. To save costs, they do tend to be harder plastics. But you don’t see that. Above all, the interior gives a homey feel and plenty of storage options. The interior comes in black or brown flavors, and for the exterior you can choose from shades such as Oxford White, Pebble Black, Sterling Silver, Andes Grey and Gloucester Green.

Conclusion review MG S9 PHEV

Below the line, the new MG S9 PHEV is actually a car on which there is little to criticize. You get a lot of car for your money. And the warranty terms are good, too. You get a standard 7-year or 150,000-mile warranty. Temporarily, MG is offering an introductory discount of 2,000 euros on all versions, making the MG S9 PHEV drivable from 43,250 euros. Nice thought, but if it can be done for 43 grand, why raise the price later? You only make your product more interesting with a lower starting price. Well, that will be called marketing. One thing is certain: this MG S9 PHEV is a welcome newcomer in this segment. It is the biggest MG to date. And a damn good one.
