The end of the scooter? Young people want microcars en masse

October 1, 2025

Microcar

Whereas for years the scooter was the choice for those who wanted to get around town quickly, the microcar is now increasingly coming to the fore. Young people see its convenience: dry, safely locked and still on the road without a car license. Especially in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, the popularity is growing rapidly. Not for nothing were all 3,000 parking permits for microcars in the capital granted in a short time.

One in five Dutch

A survey by the website MicroMobiel.nl among 1,250 Dutch people shows that more than a third of young people between the ages of 18 and 29 are enthusiastic about microcars. Among people over 50, however, interest is declining sharply. Regionally, the Randstad provinces and Limburg stand out with the largest group of interested people. Meanwhile, it is estimated that there are already about 24,000 microcars driving around in the Netherlands – and that number is growing every month.

Practical alternative

It is notable that young people see a microcar primarily as a complement to their current transportation: an alternative to a bicycle, scooter or second car. Older age groups, on the other hand, more often consider it a full-fledged replacement for their only car. On average, the Dutch drive about 30 kilometers per day, mostly within their own city or village. For those trips, a microcar is often more than sufficient.
