Is the largest Mazda CX-80 really great?

February 25, 2026

The Mazda CX-80 is an extended version based on the Mazda CX-60. Both are the same width and have the same front and rear. Following the front doors, the CX-80 is noticeably longer, with larger rear doors and larger rear side windows. Which is made possible by a longer wheelbase of 3,120 mm versus 2,870 mm. The CX-80 is also slightly taller and in length it ticks nearly 5 meters, some 25 centimeters more than the CX-60.

Mazda CX-80 and space

You notice that extra space right away, especially when you look in the interior mirror. Then you see a lump of interior space with a total of three rows of seats for up to seven occupants. Folding both rear seats into the floor and folding the middle rear seat flat creates a cargo area of 1,971 liters. The CX-60 offers a maximum of 1,736 liters.

Backseat study

That folding down or folding over of the middle rear seat requires some study. With a button, the backrest shoots forward slightly and the entire bench slides forward a bit. That is a function to allow entry into the rear two seats. To get the whole bench flat, you have to use the levers on top of the backrest.

Mazda CX-80 fuel consumption

More space also means more weight and fuel consumption, right? The largest Mazda weighs a minimum of 2,230 kg. The smaller brother sits at 2,070 kg. The difference in fuel consumption is small: 4.0 l/100 km versus 3.9 l/100 km. In practice, you end up with an average fuel intake of between 6 and 6.5 liters per 100 km for both models.

Mazda CX-80 electric driving

By driving electric as much as possible, you can significantly reduce consumption on shorter trips in the city or in traffic jams. With a full battery, it is possible to cover up to about 45 km completely electrically, according to practical experience. With the 70 liter gasoline tank completely filled, a considerable distance can be covered.

Large driving range possible

The driving range does depend heavily on your driving style. If you use the full tractive force of 261 |Nm and the power of 241 kW (327 hp) of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder on a regular basis, then consumption rises sharply. Accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds may be fun but clearly has a price. Logical of course with such a vehicle weight. If you slow down, you clearly notice this in a considerably lower consumption, especially at constant highway speeds.

Mazda CX-80 and comfort

The largest Mazda rides comfortably and offers very complete equipment. The list of safety and driver assistance systems is substantial. Electronic assistance you get to stay in the lane, automatically keep distance from the car in front when cruise control is engaged or automatic emergency braking assistance if you momentarily lose focus and react.

Break Opinion

The CX-80 also advises you to take a break if your attention is waning. A camera checks that you are looking sufficiently at the road and that you are not swerving too often or changing lanes without using the turn signal. Pleasant in such a large car are the parking cameras that show the entire area around the car on the central display. Handy is the electric opening and closing tailgate.

Strikingly large wheels

The Mazda CX-80 has large 20-inch wheels. They fit the size. Only drawback is that their weight makes them transmit the small bumps to the body a bit more. They dribble a bit on clinkers and bad asphalt. Nevertheless, the suspension comfort smooths out speed bumps and large bumps. The emphasis with the suspension is overwhelmingly on comfort rather than sportiness at the cutting edge.

Prices Mazda CX-80

You can drive the Mazda CX-80 for a price starting at 64,290 euros (anno February 2026). Solid but compared to the competition, that’s not even that crazy high. Especially when you consider the interior space, performance and towing weight. This test is about the more luxurious version Homura Plus which includes fine leather upholstery, seat ventilation and steering wheel heating. With all the extras, the price runs to about 75 grand. Then you are definitely at premium level and you can compare this Mazda to large SUVs from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Audi.
