Caterham Seven HWM Edition honors iconic F1 racer by Stirling Moss

March 9, 2026

Caterham Seven HWM Edition

Caterham has teamed up with sports car dealer HWM to present a special edition of the Seven: the Seven HWM Edition. The limited edition pays homage to the legendary 1951 HWM-Alta Grand Prix car, a model that played an important role in post-war British motorsport history. Only 19 examples of the special edition will be built for customers in the United Kingdom.

Tribute to HWM-Alta from 1951

HWM – in full Hersham and Walton Motors – was founded in 1938 and grew into an important name in motor racing after World War II. The team was the first British racing stable to achieve a Grand Prix victory in the postwar period. The highlight of the team’s history is the 1951 HWM-Alta. With Sir Stirling Moss behind the wheel, among others, the car achieved seven victories, seven second-place finishes and 10 third-place finishes in international races. That historic racer was the inspiration for the new Caterham Seven HWM Edition.

Historic details in a modern look

All 19 cars come standard in HWM Green, a color scanned from the original HWM-Alta race car. In addition, several design elements are directly inspired by the historic model. For example, the special Seven features include:

Classic cockpit

The interior also references motorsports history. The car gets a hand-turned aluminum SuperSprint dash, equipped with SMITHS chrome instruments and a metal master switch for the electrical system. The interior is also notable for a Moto-Lita steering wheel with wood trim and quick-release, a chrome shift lever and handbrake, and a transmission tunnel finished in body color. Buyers can choose from leather seats or composite racing seats, both featuring the HWM logo.

Based on the Caterham Seven 420

Under the body, the special edition is based on the Caterham Seven 420, which uses an atmospheric 2.0-liter Duratec four-cylinder that produces 210 hp at 7,600 rpm. Thanks to its low weight, the car has a power-to-weight ratio of 375 hp per ton. Combined with a five-speed manual transmission, the Seven HWM Edition sprints from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.8 seconds. The top speed is 136 mph (219 km/h). Each car also gets a “1 of 19” plaque on the dashboard, emphasizing the model’s exclusivity.

Collaboration between Caterham and HWM

HWM, based in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, is now known as a luxury sports car dealer. Since 2023, the company has been an official Caterham retailer for Southeast England, offering customers both street and race versions of the marque. HWM’s historic experience as a race car builder and collaboration with Caterham’s engineering team formed the basis for this special edition.

According to Trevor Steel, Senior Vice President Operations & CFO at Caterham Cars, the collaboration is special: “It was a privilege to work with HWM on this limited edition. Inspired by the legendary HWM-Alta racer, the car pays homage to the rich racing history of Walton-on-Thames, while embodying Caterham’s lightweight and purely driver-focused philosophy.”

Guy Jenner, CEO of HWM, also emphasizes the historic nature of the project: “With this project, we celebrate HWM’s extraordinary history as a factory team and constructor of Grand Prix cars. It gives us the opportunity to tell the story of a small team from Walton-on-Thames that competed against the biggest teams in European Grand Prix racing.”

Only 19 copies

Only 19 examples of the Caterham Seven HWM Edition will be built. The price in the United Kingdom starts at 57,990 pounds, or 66,950 euros. With that, the special edition is aimed primarily at fans of classic British sports cars and collectors who want to own a piece of motorsport history in modern form.

HWM-Alta from 1951

The 1951 HWM-Alta is one of the best-known British race cars of early postwar motor racing. Built by HWM (Hersham and Walton Motors), the model played an important role in international Formula 2 and Grand Prix racing in the early 1950s. The car was developed in 1951 by John Heath, one of the founders of HWM. The team wanted to build its own race car to compete with European factory teams such as Ferrari and Maserati. The car was given an Alta engine, a popular British racing engine at the time, giving the car the name HWM-Alta. The car was mainly used in Formula 2 races, but also appeared in some Grand Prix races run under Formula 1 rules.

Technology

The HWM-Alta was a classic open-wheel race car from the early 1950s.

Key technical features:

The engine was at the front and drove the rear wheels. The car weighed around 860 kg, which was quite light for a race car at the time.

Drivers

The HWM-Alta was driven by several well-known drivers, including:

Stirling Moss, in particular, was strongly associated with the car. He drove it in several international races and built his early career with it. Although HWM was a small private team, its achievements were impressive. In 1951, the team’s achievements with the HWM-Alta included seven wins. seven second-place finishes and ten bronze medals. This happened in international races in Europe, often against larger factory teams. One famous result, for example, was Stirling Moss’ third place in the 1951 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort
