Brussels comes with good news for RV owners

More pounds thanks to the battery

Those who want to take an electric motorhome on the road or a large electric utility vehicle will soon have to worry less about weight. Until now, a B license allowed you to drive vehicles up to 3,500 kilograms. That posed a problem for electric motorhomes and commercial vehicles: due to the heavy battery pack, they often exceeded that limit. Manufacturers therefore had to make concessions – less water on board, smaller furniture or lighter insulation – to stay within the weight limit.

With the new EU rule, that problem will soon be a thing of the past. In fact, electric motorhomes will be allowed to weigh up to 4,250 kilograms, as long as they run on electricity and still fall under category B. This suddenly gives electric campervans and utility vehicles much more leeway for batteries, comfort and equipment.

Why this exception?

The increase in weight limits had been coming for some time. The EU now recognizes that electric vehicles are heavier due to their batteries, while not necessarily more dangerous or difficult to drive. The measure should encourage the electrification of the motorhome and commercial vehicle market. Especially in Germany, France and the Netherlands – where motorhomes are wildly popular – manufacturers and enthusiasts have long complained about the old limit.

Not yet effective immediately

Although the European Parliament has already approved the new directive, member states must still transpose the rules into national law. That process could take up to several years. The new rules are expected to apply across Europe starting in 2028.

What does this mean to you?

For RVers and many companies, this means more freedom above all. Soon you will not have to change to a C1 license to go electric, and manufacturers can finally build motor homes and commercial vehicles without weight stress. At the same time, the rules for regular diesel and gasoline campers will remain the same: for these, the limit will remain at 3,500 kilograms.
