Allememaggies: this ‘Toyota GT86 TRD’ is not for modest types

March 27, 2023

It is actually a Scion FR-S TRD Release Series

Tastes are debatable. That’s why you should never say you don’t like something. Better to state that something is not your taste, because that way you avoid hurting anyone. We too know very well that this Toyota GT86 – actually, it is a Scion FR-S TRD Release Series – will not appeal to everyone. You might think of a well-known fast food chain with “golden arches” or the car of an acrobat and clown famous in Holland.

Scion FR-S TRD

Red and yellow, everywhere!

Whatever association you have with this “GT86 TRD,” the previous owner at least showed guts by executing the car as it is today. Because not only on the outside do yellow and red dominate. Just take a look at the interior. Yep, you see it right: red/yellow seats, TRD neck cushions, floor mats with red piping, a yellow shift lever, red/yellow dashboard trim and finally: bright red shifters. Because did we mention that this sports coupe has an automatic transmission? So no six-speed manual transmission.

GT86, 86, FR-S, BRZ, how about that exactly?

Scion, what about that exactly? Simple: the first-generation Toyota GT86 was sold under multiple names. Of course, you also had the Subaru BRZ, which is technically completely similar to the Toyota, but Toyota itself sold its GT86 under three different names. In Japan the car had the simple name “86” and in Europe the name was “GT86. In the United States, the car was sold as Scion, under the type name FR-S. The Scion FR-S TRD Release Series was a limited edition to introduce the FR-S.

Low mileage

High mileage is not an issue for this Scion/Toyota. The car – built in 2015 – has driven only 22,000 kilometers. According to the provider – E&A Speedy of Gouda – this is number 096 from a total run of 1,500. The powertrain has not been tinkered with, which means that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine – without a turbocharger – kicks out to 200 horsepower. The 0-100 time comes out to 8.2 seconds. What the car should cost? Don’t be alarmed: 34,500 euros.

TRD

In any case, it is a very striking and also limited edition, because, as mentioned above, this is the TRD variant. TRD stands for Toyot Racing Development. TRD was Toyota’s in-house tuner at the time. Feel free to call it the forerunner of Toyota Gazoo Racing. The successor to the GT86 is called Toyota GR86.
