Review: Lancia Ypsilon HF (2025) – hot hatch with Italian temperament?
With the HF label, the sporty heritage also returns, but in a modern era. The logo has become a little tighter, but the red elephant has been retained. And so now fully electric as a Lancia Ypsilon HF, but still true to the idea of performance, driving pleasure and distinct character.
Subtle references to the past at Lancia Ypsilon HF
What makes the Lancia Ypsilon HF especially interesting are its references to the legendary Lancias of yesteryear. For example, the round taillights are a clear nod to the Stratos, while the Econyl sport seats are reminiscent of those in the Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione. The HF logo, the lowered stance, the use of color and even the orange color “Arancione Lava” are symbolic. They relate to the past in a modern form. For those who want to know more about that rich rally history, take a moment to read this article on racing heritage with Miki Biasion, the Lancia Stratos, 037 and Delta HF Integrale.

Lancia Ypsilon HF – design with muscle.
The Ypsilon HF has many differences from the regular Ypsilon. The design has been sharpened considerably, with a lowered suspension, 30 mm wider track and widened wheel arches that make the body more muscular. Specific bumpers with HF logos, a diffuser, dark badges and special 18-inch rims complete the picture.

Inside, that sporty line continues. Sports seats, a perforated sports steering wheel with HF logo, aluminum pedals and a dashboard that flows from blue to orange. It immediately feels like something extra special.

What lurks under the electric hood?
Under the hood is a 280-hp electric powertrain, good for a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.6 seconds. The 400V architecture and 54 kWh battery provide a WLTP range of 370 km, and fast charging to 100 km of range in 10 minutes. Thanks to a Torsen differential and a reinforced chassis (+67% front, +153% rear), the Lancia Ypsilon HF is more than just fast in a straight line.
After all, it is also built to steer. The steering is sharp, the suspension stiff but not punishing, the grip impressive. When cornering, it stays true to your line without getting nervous. Thanks to the limited slip differential, you can feel the inside corner effectively pulling at you. In addition, the Alcon braking system with four-piston calipers and enlarged 355 mm discs offers not only solid braking power, but also endurance in firm cornering and sporty use.

Alpine A290 to rival the Lancia Ypsilon HF
But how does it compare to the competition? As far as we are concerned, the Alpine A290 is the hot hatch to beat this year. If only because of the “Car of the Year” designation it shares with the Renault 5.
So, that’s where the bar is set. Interestingly, the Lancia has more power and torque than the Alpine. Especially at higher speeds, the Ypsilon feels more potent. It keeps going where the Alpine loses some of its aggression. When cornering, it’s a different story. The Ypsilon HF is fast and stable, but lacks the A290’s playful edge. With the Alpine, if you force it, you can make the rear end come around a bit. An absolute treat if you like sporty driving. The Ypsilon prefers to keep everything on track. So it is and remains sharp, but does not deviate from it either.

Alpine A290 also packs just a little more into the experience. Think virtual sounds to a telemetry submenu where you can track acceleration, G-forces and even a workout. The Ypsilon is a bit more subdued and perhaps more stylish in this comparison. That may actually be a plus for some.
One thought does remain gnawing. What if this Ypsilon HF didn’t have an electric motor, but a bubbling and popping exhaust pipe? A compact, aggressive gasoline version, something like a modern “HF Integrale,” would have fit perfectly into Lancia’s history. Maybe one day that will come, we certainly hope so! A new Delta is in the pipeline, but will be delayed until 2028.
Not only fast, but also practical
Despite its performance, the Ypsilon HF is also usable in daily traffic. It is and remains a fine compact car that is very agile. On board you will find the necessary driving assistance systems that make you comfortable on the road. Think adaptive cruise control, emergency braking assistance and traffic sign recognition. The infotainment system with 10.25-inch digital display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the updated S.A.L.A interface is clear and modern.

Conclusion:
Until then, we are absolutely content with this electric chapter. And frankly, it is a convincing start. The Lancia Ypsilon HF is a successful reintroduction of the legendary HF label. It looks muscular, drives sleek and offers more power than many a competitor. Lancia HF is back, and that is a celebration in itself!
Still, would you prefer just sporty looks without the electric violence? Then there is also the Lancia Ypsilon HF-Line. Here the mild-hybrid version is equipped with sporty trim.
