First glimpse of new-generation BMW 3 Series

March 5, 2026

Neue Klasse

The next-generation BMW 3 Series will appear in 2026 and will be perhaps the most important 3 Series in decades. Not only because the model is completely new, but also because it will be the next chapter in BMW’s new technological era, called Neue Klasse.

A new chapter for BMW

The 3 Series has been the heart of BMW since 1975. With each generation, the model shows where the brand stands technically and philosophically. The upcoming eighth generation, to be unveiled in 2026 and launched later that year, will therefore have a hugely symbolic role. Indeed, it will be BMW’s first compact sedan developed entirely according to the Neue Klasse concept. In doing so, BMW aims to reshape its entire model lineup, similar to what the brand did in the 1960s when the first “Neue Klasse” BMWs put the brand back on the map. The new BMW iX3 basically already provides a preview.

Electric and gasoline side by side

What makes this BMW 3 Series special is that BMW is taking two different directions at once. The traditional 3 Series will remain with gasoline and hybrid powertrains, but in addition there will be an all-electric variant. That electric version will likely again be called BMW i3 and will be the EV counterpart to the 3 Series, just as the i5 is to the 5 Series and the i7 is to the 7 Series. Both models will be very similar in design but completely different technically. This will allow BMW to let customers choose between traditional fuel engines and all-electric driving.

New basis: the Neue Klasse architecture

The electric 3 Series sits on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform, an entirely new architecture for future EVs. Among other things, that uses an 800-volt system, which allows fast charging with power outputs of up to about 400 kW. BMW is also introducing a new electronic architecture and software platform that the brand says will form the basis for all future models. For BMW, this is more than just a new platform: it should strengthen its competition with Tesla and Chinese EV brands while maintaining BMW’s reputation as a driver’s brand.

Design: back to simplicity

In terms of appearance, the new 3 Series will be quite a style break from the current generation. The design is based on the Vision Neue Klasse concept car. Expect a tighter, simpler silhouette with fewer lines, flat surfaces and probably smaller kidneys than on recent BMWs. There will also likely be recessed door handles and a minimalist front end. Still, typical BMW features such as the Hofmeister kink in the rear side window will remain.

A completely new interior

Inside, the car gets a radically new cockpit concept. BMW is introducing a wide Panoramic Vision display that projects information across the full width of the windshield. This literally shifts the instrument cluster to the windshield, while greatly reducing the number of physical buttons. The interior should also become more software-driven, with regular updates and more integration of driver assistance systems and infotainment.

Soon we will undoubtedly hear more details about the new BMW 3 Series.
