Polestar’s Scandinavian take on luxury EV design

The innovative electric hydrofoil combines Polestar’s Scandinavian take on luxury EV design with Candela’s technology, helping both partners accelerate the transition to more sustainable electric mobility. The striking design elements of this unique Candela include a new solid light gray color, specially designed seat upholstery and carrier wings in the iconic color Swedish gold.

This boat takes off…

“Candela’s hydrofoil technology is creating a paradigm shift in sustainable performance in the marine world. Just like when you drive an electric car for the first time, you immediately feel that this is the future when this boat ‘takes off.’ Among other things, it now also has the same special gold details that you also find on our cars,” said Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar.

The two Swedish premium mobility brands recently signed an agreement under which Polestar will supply batteries and charging technology for Candela’s electric hydrofoils.

The Candela C-8 Polestar edition brings Polestar’s vision of Scandinavian luxury to the maritime world. Distinctive design elements include the new solid gray exterior color combined with a lighter shade of gray for the interior. The uniform and clean look is enhanced by using the same marine-certified textiles everywhere, from the seating, cushions and loungers to the wall and roof panels.

Design principles from the automotive world

Design principles from the automotive world were also applied especially for this edition, resulting, among other things, in the thoughtfully designed seat upholstery that further enhances comfort in this electric hydrofoil. To highlight Candela’s innovative technology and performance, the hydrofoils are painted in the iconic Swedish Gold that is also found on Polestar’s Performance models.

“Aesthetic design can also serve as a powerful driver for a more sustainable future. At Candela, our primary focus is on creating vessels that are more attractive in every way. I am therefore very pleased with the C-8 Polestar edition and our collaboration with Polestar’s brilliant team,” says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela.

Battery Polestar Candela C-8

All versions of the Candela C-8 since 2023 are equipped with  the 69 kWh battery and charging equipment from the Polestar 2 Standard range to achieve a range of up to 57 nautical miles on a single charge at a cruising speed of 22 knots. This is a favorable value compared to traditional motorboats, which is also combined with a high-speed range 2 to 3 times greater than that of conventional electric speedboats.

Candela C-POD

The Candela C-8 uses an efficient, 75 kW electric direct drive pod motor – the Candela C-POD – and “flies” on computer-controlled hydrofoils that lift the hull above the water at high speeds. This technology can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% compared to traditional motorboats. Thanks to Candela’s computer-stabilized technology, the C8 sails not only quickly and efficiently, but also comfortably.

Price tag

Available online at the Polestar Additions webshop or at Candela.com, the Candela C-8 Polestar edition is sold and delivered by Candela. Prices start at 400,000 euros. Production will take place at Candela’s plant in Stockholm, Sweden, and the first deliveries are expected from June 2024.

Collaborations Polestar

The design collaboration with Candela is the latest in a series of partnerships that have allowed Polestar to target forms of mobility other than electric cars. Some examples include the Polestar editions of the CAKE Makka, the electric moped, Allebike’s high-performance mountain bike and Re:Move, the multifunctional electric transport concept.
