This is the most fuel-efficient Alfa Romeo ever

November 18, 2022

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the first all-new Alfa Romeo since 2016. With this model, the Italians mainly want to compete with cars such as the BMW X1 and X2, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Jaguar E-Pace. Sales began last summer with the extra-thickly dressed Edizione Speciale, equipped with a 130-hp 1.5-liter gasoline engine with mild-hybrid technology. Now the offering is further expanded with the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid. This is the new top version in the range with the most powerful powertrain and sportiest handling.

280 hp and 69 km of electric range

The drive system of the Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid consists of a 1.3-liter turbo engine that drives the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission and an electric motor on the rear axle. When both engines work together optimally, the Tonale produces 280 hp combined with all-wheel drive (Q4).

The electric motor is powered by a 15.5 kWh battery. With it, you can support the gasoline engine for long periods for more power and extra low consumption, or drive a distance of up to 69 kilometers completely electric. Top speed in 100% electric e-AWD mode is capped at 135 km/h.

According to the official test (WLTP), the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid consumes an average of 1.3 to 1.4 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. CO2 emissions come out at 29 to 32 g/km. But to get the most out of the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid, you have to charge the battery consistently. Fortunately, it doesn’t take that long. Thanks to the 7.4 kW onboard charger, an empty battery is fully recharged in less than 2.5 hours.

By the way, the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid marks the start of a major electrification offensive by Alfa Romeo. The brand is working toward an all-electric model lineup by 2027. Thus, the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid is not long-lived, since in five years already no new models with combustion engines will be sold.

From 50,900 euros

The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid can be ordered for prices starting at 50,900 euros. The brand will first start delivering the “Edizione Speciale” with all the trimmings. Consider a host of luxury features, a newly developed infotainment system with large screens, 4G connectivity with OTA (Over The Air) updates and a comprehensive range of safety features. You can also count on 20-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and an app that lets you remotely control the charging process and operate various vehicle functions.

The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid will also be available later in TI and Veloce versions. Their prices will be released later. The entry-level version of the Alfa Romeo Tonale is available from 42,000 euros. For that money, you get a 130-hp 1.5T Hybrid in Super trim.
