Electric Compact Architecture platform
The reinvention of this iconic city car from Smart is gaining momentum as the brand has begun field tests of the Electric Compact Architecture platform (ECA) of the all-electric #2. To approve the all-new architecture and technological platform, Smart engineers are conducting tests on bodies from the existing Smart Fortwo. This is confirmation that the #2 remains true to the ultra-compact dimensions of the original.
Smart #2 has two seats
In addition to its ultra-compact size, the Smart #2 retains the two-door, two-seat configuration, rear-wheel drive and characteristic wheelbase of the Fortwo. With a completely redesigned interior and exterior by the Mercedes-Benz design team, the Smart #2 will be launched with a fresh identity. The new ECA platform is the basis for a new electric powertrain and smart safety features. Smart also promises an “unparalleled driving experience, especially in the city.”

The latest tests with the ECA architecture have been made possible by a creative technical solution: integrating the new platform into existing Smart Fortwo bodies, creating several highly representative test vehicles. Using these prototypes, Smart’s R&D team is conducting tests worldwide in specialized facilities.
Teamwork
Thus, in China, engineers focus on the core driving dynamics: refining handling and roadholding for urban agility, checking the strength of the platform structure and optimizing the performance of the braking system. At the same time, other test sites are testing crash safety, suspension durability, battery performance, software systems and climate control under various conditions, all essential steps in preparing the vehicle for the next phase of testing and eventually series production.
