MG sales figures

MG Motor is pushing hard in Europe. Successfully, by the way, since MG’s comeback in Europe, the brand has already sold over 150,000 cars. Between January and August 2022 alone, there were 60,000. So growth at MG. Currently, MG supplies four models, namely the MG ZS, MG EHS Plug-in Hybrid, MG Marvel R and the MG5. To that now comes this MG4 Electric.

MG Cyberster in 2023

In 2023, MG will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The brand will then come out with a special car. Then MG will introduce the production version of the MG Cyberster: a high-performance two-door roadster with an electric powertrain. MG is currently conducting the final test work so that the MG Cyberster will be completely ready for its market launch in 2023.

MG4 Electric important model

So exciting times at MG. The brand hopes to have opened a total of 840 brand stores in 26 European countries by the end of 2022. The goal is to have a portfolio of as many as ten models by the end of 2025. The new MG4 Electric is an important model in this model offensive, as it is the first electric MG to stand on the new MSP-EV platform.

Modular Scalable Platform

MSP stands for Modular Scalable Platform and was developed by parent company SAIC. The platform is suitable for cars A- to even the D-segment. Hatchback, SUV and even a sports car, anything goes. According to MG, it is a very versatile platform with a low center of gravity. A special feature is that the battery in the MSP-EV platform is only 110 mm high, allowing a low roofline to be realized, as well as a substantial wheelbase.

Dimensions MG4 Electric

The MG4 Electric is 4,287 mm long, 1,836 mm wide and 1,504 mm high. Considering its compact size, the wheelbase can be called considerable: 2,705 mm. The electric MG4 has a luggage space of 350 liters (up to 1,177 liters) and as many as 28 storage compartments throughout the interior. The interior looks quite minimalistic, but it does look very nice. MG uses high quality materials and real push buttons instead of touch buttons.

Interior MG4

Inside, the 7-inch digital cockpit stands out, as does the hefty 10.25-inch iSmart infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Depending on the version, this system is fully connected to the Internet. The system also has voice control. It is further possible to charge smartphones wirelessly.

Driving assistance systems abound, think 360-degree cameras for parking, semi-autonomous driving as well as adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist. All these systems are possible thanks to MG Pilot: a system with cameras and sensors that continuously monitor the car’s surroundings.

Drive lines for MG4 Electric

So what about the powertrains? MG kicks off with a 170 hp (125 kW) and 204 hp (150 kW) electric motor with 250 Nm of torque. Both electric motors drive the rear wheels. At its most favorable, the MG4 Electric weighs 1,655 kilograms. The 0-100 sprint then takes less than 8 seconds.

The entry-level version has a 51 kWh lithium-ion battery with a range of 350 kilometers. The provisionally largest battery has a capacity of 64 kWh, good for 450 kilometers of range. Two more versions will follow, namely a 77 kWh battery with over 500 kilometers of range and a sporty MG4 Electric with all-wheel drive. In this case, the hatchback has two electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle. MG promises at least 408 hp and a 0-100 time of less than four seconds. The two-door MG Cyberster is expected to receive the same powertrain.

Riding modes

The MG4 Electric has five driving modes, namely Snow, Eco, Standard, Sport and a Custom mode where you can adjust parameters such as the level of power steering, feel in the brake and throttle and more. There is no longer a physical connection to the brakes and the brake pedal. The MG4 Electric has a brake-by-wire system. This responds faster to input from the brake pedal and also allows for adjustment of brake pedal feel.

MG4 Electric charging

Of course, the MG4 Electric also needs to be charged. With preconditioning and 135 kW fast charging, it takes only 35 minutes (10-80 percent). Home charging is also possible. Thanks to an 11 kW onboard charger, full charging takes 6.5 hours. You can store the charging cable in the cargo area. More expensive versions have a heat pump. All versions have an active grille that closes and opens automatically depending on cooling needs.

The MG4 Electric can be ordered immediately as Standard, Comfort and Luxury. The Standard is only available with a 51 kWh battery. The Comfort and Luxury have the 51 or 64 kWh battery. MG provides a 7-year warranty. The MG4 Electric Standard with 51 kWh battery and 125 kW (170 hp) of power is available from €30,785.
