Coming Mercedes-AMG CLE Coupe no surprise, its power is!

December 6, 2023

Mercedes-Benz CLE

Just for the record, Mercedes-Benz has replaced the C-Class Coupe/Cabrio and E-Class Coupe/Cabrio with one model: the Mercedes-Benz CLE in Coupe and Cabriolet flavors. This Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe constitutes one of the most powerful models.

Powertrain CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe

The 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine – named M 256M – in the CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe has dual supercharging via an exhaust gas turbo and an additional electric compressor. The block produces an output of 330 kW (449 hp) and maximum torque of 560 Nm (with an overboost of 600 Nm for 12 seconds). The integrated starter alternator briefly delivers an additional 17 kW (23 hp) of power and 205 Nm of torque. This alternator also powers the 48V on-board grid. Other technical features of the new model include the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4Matic+. Yep, those Germans know how to come up with fun terms.

Nice and thick

The wider front and rear splash guards, the large track width (plus 58 mm at the front, plus 75 mm at the rear compared to the Mercedes-Benz model) and the 19-inch rims give AMG’s new coupe a powerful look. 20-inch rims are available as an option, as are Digital Light headlights with and without projection function. The spoiler edge on the tailgate is body-colored, but is also available in black as an option as part of the AMG option package.

AMG option package

The optional AMG option package sets even sportier accents. The package includes additional flics on the front and rear skirts, a heftier spoiler lip on the tailgate and a diffuser plate between the exhaust trim pieces. For further individualization, two AMG night packages and AMG carbon packages are available.

Interior Mercedes-AMG CLE

The interior of the Mercedes-AMG CLE is richly appointed. We spy the MBUX infotainment system, a free-standing 12.3-inch all-digital driver display, an 11.9-inch driver-facing central display and ambient lighting with 64 colors. Through the AMG menu, the driver has access to several special displays, such as engine data, shift indication, warm-up, set-up, G-Force gauge and race timer. In each door, a light strip runs along the contour lines of the armrest and the top of the door to the rear compartment.

Another highlight are the integral seats in leather look Artico/microfiber Microcut black with AMG-specific graphics and red contrast trim. Other interior features include red seat belts and trim parts in glossy carbon fiber. Numerous optional upholsteries in leather and Nappa leather are available. When nappa leather is selected, the AMG emblem is embossed in the front headrests.

AMG Performance seats

AMG Performance seats are available as an option. These are especially characterized by highly contoured side cheeks, which provide even better lateral support. Vertical openings add visual accents, as well as save weight and provide better back ventilation. When upholstered in Nappa leather, the seats are also accented in a contrasting color.

Performance

The electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h can be increased to 270 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package. The high-performance AMG brake system is matched to the power and performance of the CLE 53 Coupe. On the front axle, perforated and internally ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 370 x 36 mm and fixed brake calipers with four pistons and lettering ‘AMG’ are fitted. On the rear axle, the model features internally ventilated 360 x 26 mm diameter brake discs and single-piston floating calipers.

AMG Dynamic Select

With the five AMG Dynamic Select driving programs “Slippery,” “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport+” and “Individual,” the characteristics of the new 53 models can be influenced with one finger. Regardless of the AMG Dynamic Select driving modes, the “M” button allows the driver to switch directly to manual mode and shift gears exclusively with the steering wheel shift paddles. Damping levels can also be selected as needed.

Variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4Matic+

The fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4Matic+ is standard. In quiet driving, where four-wheel drive is not required, the front axle is fully disengaged. From the ESP Sport setting, handling is more focused on the rear wheels. In drift mode, in the new AMG CLE Coupe, only the rear wheels are driven over the entire speed range.

Standard rear axle steering

The standard rear axle steering operates with a maximum steering angle of 2.5 degrees. Up to this angle, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels at speeds up to 100 km/h (variable and depending on the AMG Dynamics setting). This leads to a virtual shortening of the wheelbase and results in easier maneuvering, less steering and greater maneuverability. The turning radius is noticeably smaller when turning or parking. At speeds above 100 km/h (variable and depending on the AMG DYNAMICS setting), the rear wheels turn parallel to the front wheels – to an angle of up to 0.7 degrees.
