Why it’s unwise to buy insurance in your mom or dad’s name
Fronting
It sounds smart: getting scooter insurance in your mom or dad’s name, because they’ve been riding claim-free for years and are a lot cheaper than you as a 16-year-old moped rider. Only, of course, that’s not the point. Because if you are the actual driver, but not listed as such, that is deception. And that can work to your disadvantage in the event of a claim.
Insurer Univé is seeing an increase in the use of “fronting”. Internal research shows that young people between the ages of 16 and 22 are particularly creative when filling out their applications. And especially Vespa riders and minors, who are remarkably often missing from the policy even though they are going on the road.
Parents on the policy
Analysis of thousands of applications from the past three years shows a clear trend. Young people try to enter different ages to see where they get the cheapest deal. In 2024, 15% of applications already showed that the actual driver was not on the policy. By 2025, that has already risen to more than 20%.
35 years and older
What is particularly striking in this regard: the number of scooter insurance policies in the names of people over 35 is increasing remarkably. There is even a spike of 49-year-olds suddenly taking out insurance. Chances are this is not a renewed love for the moped, but rather the result of parents arranging insurance for their offspring.
Stricter supervision and controls on scooter insurance policies
Univé has therefore announced that it is going to check more closely who actually drives. Think of random checks, inquiries in case of damage or additional checks when taking out a policy. So be warned.
