What does this “diamond sign” you often see on vacation in France mean?
French road sign
In general, most countries use broadly the same road signs. That makes driving across borders a lot easier and safer. Still, each country has a few unique signs that you don’t see anywhere else. This sign below in France, with the striking diamond, is a good example.

What does the window mean?
The window represents a vehicle lane reserved for specific vehicles. No, this does not only apply to Renault drivers. When the sign is activated, the lane is intended for carpooling: in other words, driving together.
Smart solution for crowds
The window usually appears during rush hours, when traffic increases. But you also often see it during traffic jams or an accident further down the road. The idea is simple: by encouraging people to drive together, it reduces the number of cars on the road. Instead of five cars with one person in them, those same five people can be in one car together and use this special lane. This way traffic flows better.
The rules in a row
You may use the special strip only when the window lights up and you meet the conditions:
- Cars with at least two occupants (sometimes three, depending on the location; this is indicated).
- In some cases electric cars with a special sticker.
- Cabs and buses.
If you do drive alone in a gasoline or diesel car on this lane, you risk a fine of 135 euros. See that the window is crossed out with a red line? Then the lane is again open to all traffic.
