Top 10: cars that depreciate the least according to ANWB

May 26, 2025

ANWB

The ANWB has listed the ten most valuable cars of the past five years. The winner comes – of course, you might almost say – from Japan, although it is perhaps not the brand you would first expect. Because no, not Toyota but Suzuki tops the list. In the top ten are no fewer than four Suzuki models that have particularly low depreciation. The top five even includes three (!) models of the Japanese brand: the Suzuki Jimny (spot 1), Ignis (spot 2) and Swift (spot 4). The Suzuki Vitara can be found in eighth place.

Skoda also scores well

Skoda also does good business with two models in the top 10: the Kodiaq (number 3) and its smaller brother, the Karoq (number 5), retain relatively high value. Other models doing well for the wallet are the Fiat Panda, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2 and Honda Jazz. The Japanese brands are thus – as expected – strongly represented.

Why does Suzuki score so well?

Suzuki’s models are known for their solidity, which contributes to their high resale value. But more is at play. The new prices of models like the Jimny and Ignis have risen sharply in recent years, in part because of rising bpm – the purchase tax based largely on CO₂ emissions. That higher new car price also causes used car prices to rise, limiting depreciation.

Overview of value cars

The table below from the ANWB shows what the original new price was five years ago of the ten value-retaining models and what they are roughly worth now when sold or traded in. As you can see, the Jimny loses only 25% of its original value after five years, and the Ignis doesn’t do much worse.
