These are the best-selling car makes and models of 2023

Car sales were brisk in 2023, RAI Association figures show. A whopping 369,791 new passenger cars were officially registered last year, representing a 19 percent increase over the previous year. Only 312,129 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands in 2022. In that year, Kia managed to sell 30,036 cars in our country, making the brand by far the best-selling car brand in the Netherlands. This year, Volkswagen takes the lead as the best-selling car brand, with 34,958 registrations.

  1. Volkswagen (34,958 registrations with 9.5 percent market share)
  2. Kia (33,504 registrations with 9.1 percent market share)
  3. Toyota (25,576 registrations with 6.9 percent market share)
  4. BMW (20,529 registrations with 5.6 percent market share)
  5. Skoda (20,498 registrations with 5.5 percent market share)

Top 5 best-selling cars 2023

The best-selling model is not from the Wolfsburg camp, but it does have a German connection. Not that it has its cradle there, but that is where it is assembled for the European market – at the Gigafactory in Berlin. We are, of course, talking about the Tesla Model Y. A whopping 13,758 units arrived in our country last year. The entire top five:

  1. Tesla Model Y (13,758 registrations with 3.7 percent market share)
  2. Kia Picanto (10,530 registrations with 2.8 percent market share)
  3. Peugeot 208 (9,007 registrations with 2.4 percent market share)
  4. Volvo XC40 (8,323 registrations with 2.3 percent market share)
  5. Kia Niro (7,412 registrations with 2 percent market share

Top 5 best-selling electric cars 2023

In the Netherlands, we love electric driving. That’s why we also take a look at the best-selling electric cars. Of course, the Model Y tops the list, but other electric models also did extremely well in our little country. Volvo continues to impress with the XC40 – recently updated – while Peugeot continues to score with the e-208, also recently updated.

  2. Volvo XC40 (6,342 registrations with 5.6 percent market share in electric market)
  3. Peugeot 208 (5,584 registrations with 4.9 percent market share in electric market)
  4. Tesla Model 3 (5,058 registrations with 4.4 percent market share in electric market)
  5. Skoda Enyaq (4,715 registrations with 4.1 percent market share in electric market)
