April 23, 2026

New face of BMW in the luxury segment

Within BMW’s entire model range, the BMW 7 Series takes a leading role in introducing new technologies, regardless of the powertrain chosen or the segment in which the model is located. As the brand’s flagship and signboard, the BMW 7 Series Sedan represents BMW’s new face in the luxury segment. Its sleek, almost sculptural exterior creates a powerful and recognizable appearance.

Inside, everything is about refinement. The interior combines high-quality materials with minimalist design and an impressive lighting experience that completely surrounds the occupants. New technologies, such as BMW Panoramic iDrive, take infotainment and interaction to a higher level and introduce, among other things, the standard BMW Passenger Screen for the front passenger.

The BMW 7 Series Sedan is distinguished by a balanced mix of comfort and driving dynamics, regardless of the powertrain chosen. You can choose from efficient fuel engines, plug-in hybrids and all-electric variants. The latter now offer a driving range of up to 728 kilometers (WLTP), thanks in part to the latest generation BMW eDrive with cylindrical battery cells. Advanced driving assistance systems, supported by BMW Symbiotic Drive and artificial intelligence, provide additional convenience and safety in semi-autonomous driving and parking.

Exterior BMW 7 Series Sedan

The updated BMW 7 Series Sedan introduces a fresh interpretation of BMW’s design for the luxury segment and shows how the new design language is applied to a premium model. The exterior is deliberately kept sleek and solid, making the car immediately noticeable. Features include the illuminated BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille and the minimalistically designed BMW Individual crystal front headlights.

When approaching and exiting the car, personalized lighting animations – including a dynamic light carpet – create a fluid and luxurious experience. The side view is characterized by clean surfaces and refined details, while the rear features newly designed lighting elements.

For those seeking more sportiness, there are three BMW M Performance versions. These variants emphasize the brand’s dynamic character with such features as larger air intakes, dark-tinted lighting and M-specific accents. The M Sport Package and M Sport Package Pro also give the car a sportier look.

More than 500 paint variations

In terms of personalization, there are more than 500 paint options and color combinations to choose from, including options from the BMW Individual program. The new BMW Individual Dual-Finish paint technology combines advanced technology with traditional craftsmanship and demonstrates what is currently possible in automotive paint. In addition, a wide selection of alloy wheels is available, ranging from 20 to 22 inches. Interestingly, 22-inch rims are now available directly from the factory for the first time.

Technology

The interior introduces the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system, based on BMW Operating System X. This system brings together displays, controls and software into one and places a strong emphasis on ease of use and intuitive interaction. For the first time, the BMW 7 Series features a dedicated screen for the front passenger: the BMW Passenger Screen, which comes standard. The rear BMW Theatre Screen has been further developed and turns the rear seat into a kind of private cinema or mobile workstation.

The interior atmosphere is enhanced by new ambient lighting and additional lighting elements, which create a warm and exclusive ambience. For audio, there is a choice of high-quality Bowers & Wilkins systems with up to 36 speakers, including 4D audio and support for Dolby Atmos, ensuring an impressive sound experience.

The interior can be widely personalized, with about 700 possible combinations of materials, finishes and options, including several BMW Individual elements. In terms of seating comfort, the BMW 7 Series offers multifunction seats as standard, with the optional Executive Lounge in the rear for extra luxury on long journeys. The doors have also been updated. Thanks to automatic controls with Soft Close and precise radar sensors, they open and close smoothly and in a controlled manner.

BMW Panoramic iDrive

Standard equipment is extensive and includes a panoramic glass roof, four-zone climate control and the Travel & Comfort System. BMW Panoramic iDrive is at the heart of the digital experience. The system combines various displays and controls and ensures that information is displayed in a logical, clear and ergonomic manner. A key part of this is BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects information across the full width of the windshield. Essential driving information is directly in the driver’s field of vision, while other information is freely configurable.

Large displays, including for the passenger

Above it is the BMW 3D Head-Up Display, which projects important data three-dimensionally into the driver’s view. The central display measures 17.9 inches and offers high resolution, intuitive touch operation and quick access to frequently used functions. The BMW Passenger Screen, measuring 14.6 inches, provides the front passenger with access to entertainment such as streaming services, games, music and video calls. The screen can also be used while driving, without distracting the driver, thanks to a smart privacy feature. When no passenger is present, the screen automatically switches to a subtle display that matches the rest of the interior. The multifunction steering wheel uses “shy tech”: controls light up only when needed and provide haptic feedback.

Theatre Screen

The BMW Theatre Screen in the rear features a 31.3-inch display with 8K resolution, combined with a high-end audio system. This transforms the rear seat into a luxurious entertainment space. Users can customize the system to their liking with widgets, which can be easily moved via drag-and-drop.

BMW Operating System X

The software foundation is BMW Operating System X, which provides flexibility and regular updates. In addition, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant offers comprehensive voice control supported by Amazon Alexa+ AI, making interaction natural and conversational.

Powertrains and performance

The all-electric BMW i7 achieves a range of up to 728 kilometers (WLTP), thanks in part to a new battery with a usable capacity of up to 112.5 kWh and the latest generation of battery cells. The electric i7 is available as i7 50 xDrive, i7 60 xDrive and i7 M70 xDrive. Fast charging is faster than before: with a charging capacity of up to 250 kW, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 28 minutes. Smart features such as automatic charge planning and temperature management make charging more efficient and easier. In addition, the car can respond smartly to the energy market by automatically charging at times when power prices are low.

Gasoline engines as well

For fuel-engine enthusiasts, the BMW 740 xDrive with six-in-line gasoline engine and mild-hybrid technology is among them. An additional M Performance model with V8 engine will follow later. The BMW 740d xDrive diesel delivers 230 kW (313 hp) and combines power with a quiet and comfortable driving experience. Plug-in hybrids, such as the BMW 750e xDrive and BMW M760e xDrive, offer more power and practicality without sacrificing luggage space.

Driving assistance systems and safety

New driver assistance systems use BMW Symbiotic Drive, which focuses on the cooperation between driver and car. The car supports the driver, but always leaves room for your own input, so you remain in control of accelerating, steering and braking. On the highway, the updated Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving up to 130 km/h, including automatic lane changes. In urban environments, the City Assistant helps with complex situations such as intersections, traffic circles and traffic lights, although this feature is not yet available in the Netherlands for now. The combination of sensors, AI and digital maps allows the car to adapt smoothly to traffic situations.

Standard features include Driving Assistant Plus, which includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. Additional safety features such as emergency braking assistance, evasive action and cross-traffic alerts contribute to a safe driving experience. Parking is made easier thanks to Park Assist with AI, while Parking Assistant Professional offers additional features via a smartphone app.

Handling and chassis

The BMW 7 Series is now available with 22-inch wheels and standard wider tires, contributing to stability and grip. The standard adaptive air suspension provides a comfortable and stable driving experience. Optional systems such as Integral Active Steering and active roll stabilization are available, providing added agility and comfort. For sportier versions, there are customized suspension settings that enhance the dynamic character. Smart systems monitor tire pressure and wear and provide timely warnings of deviations. The braking system and wheel slip control contribute to a precise and controlled driving experience, even in challenging conditions.

Is the new BMW 7 Series even a little durable?

The BMW 7 Series’ sustainability approach applies to all variants and is applied transparently throughout the car’s life cycle. The latest generation of battery cells in the BMW i7 is produced with renewable energy and more recycled raw materials, reducing CO2 emissions. From 2026, the alloy wheels consist largely of recycled aluminum.

Sustainably produced?

All versions of the BMW 7 Series roll off the same production line at the Dingolfing plant, which is increasingly using renewable energy sources, including solar panels and biomass. The world premiere will take place at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2026, with production and delivery starting in July of the same year.
