Motorcycling as a new hobby: all the ins and outs
Why motorcycling?
Motorcycling for many is much more than a hobby, it becomes a piece of your identity. The freedom, enthusiastic community, and the joy of riding make motorcycling not a phase for most people, but a hobby for life. Motorcycling is versatile and both exciting and relaxing. Whether you plan to tour Europe, burn rubber on the track, or simply ride to work.
Getting your driver’s license
Convinced? Before you can embark on your adventures, of course, you need a motorcycle license. Fortunately, that is quite doable! You usually start with theory lessons and a theory exam. This is followed by practical lessons for traffic participation (AVD) and vehicle control (AVB). Once you have passed your theory, AVD, and AVB, you may hit the road.
There are three types of motorcycle licenses: A1, A2, and A. Which one you need depends on the power of the motorcycle you will be riding:
- A1: For a light motorcycle with no more than 11 kilowatts (kW) of power and 125 cc engine capacity.
- A2: For a medium-duty engine of up to 35 kW power.
- A: for heavy motorcycles with no power limit. You must be at least 22 years old to obtain this license.
Buying and insuring your motorcycle
After getting your driver’s license, the big choosing begins: which motorcycle suits you? There are many types, including touring motorcycles, naked bikes, sport bikes and choppers. You may already have a favorite in mind, but it’s smart to try out different models and see which one sits and rides best. Are you buying a used motorcycle? Then check carefully the bike’s condition, mileage and service booklet.
Don’t forget your motorcycle insurance, either. You are required to have at least third-party insurance. Do you also want to be insured against theft or damage to your own motorcycle? Then choose WA+ or All-risk. Compare prices and conditions, so there are no surprises.
The right equipment
The chances of you going down on a motorcycle are unfortunately there. That is why it is super important to protect your body properly. A helmet is mandatory, but that’s not all. Consider this equipment as well:
- Sturdy motorcycle shoes: these protect your ankles and feet in the event of a fall.
- Motorcycle jacket or jacket with protection: make sure the jacket has protection on your shoulders, elbows and back.
- Gloves with protection: good gloves protect your hands and wrists.
- Sunglasses or visor with sun protection: ensures good vision even when the sun shines brightly.
For a complete starter kit, you can easily spend around €1,000. That may seem like a lot of money, but when it comes down to it, you will thank yourself very much!
Ready for the adventure?
Motorcycling is an amazing adventure. You discover new roads, make friends and experience something special every ride. With the right license, a good motorcycle, the right equipment and a little guts, you are ready to enjoy yourself. Get on, start the bike and feel the freedom!
