Mercedes-Benz recalls the roofless G-Class
A cult classic with a questionable charm
The previous convertible version of the G-Class, on sale at the turn of the century as G500 Cabriolet, was basically a two-door variant with a cloth roof. Not exactly elegant, but that very angular charm endeared it to a select group of fans. Rich collectors today quietly pay absurd sums for a copy. Now a new version is finally coming.
Mercedes confirms return
Mercedes-Benz itself is keeping it short for now. In a first teaser on social media, the brand announces, “The icon evolves. The top goes down. The legendary G Cabriolet returns.” Many more details are still missing, but the image that has been shared does betray that it is a four-seater with four doors. This makes the new convertible more practical than its predecessor.

How will the roof work?
Not much can be seen in the shadowy teaser photo, but insiders expect a structure reminiscent of the Maybach G650 Landaulet. In it, a large fabric roof slides back, allowing passengers to sit in the sun in both the front and rear.
Why now?
The hunger for eye-catching variants of luxury SUVs seems unquenchable for now. Coupes, limited editions and one-off specials are flying around your ears, even in the SUV segment. In that respect, it is actually remarkable that Mercedes-Benz is only now coming out with a new open version of the G-Class. Because let’s be honest: the G-Class is the calling card for those who are rich and want to show it off. And what better way to do that than in a convertible?
