Mercedes-Benz G-Class family gets expansion
After Austria follows Sweden
The test phase is not limited to Austria. Later, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet will travel to Sweden, where the model will be exposed to winter conditions. In ice and snow, the aim is to show how the powertrain, body construction and electronics cope with low temperatures and slippery surfaces. Only after completion of these test programs will Mercedes-Benz release more specifications and details.

Since 1979
The arrival of a new Cabriolet variant is a notable step within the long history of the G-Class. The model originally appeared in 1979 as a purely functional off-road vehicle, developed in cooperation with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. In the decades that followed, the G-Class grew from a military and utilitarian vehicle to a fixture within the luxury 4×4 segment. A convertible version existed earlier: from the 1980s until 2013, Mercedes-Benz released an open G-Class with a canvas roof, especially popular among enthusiasts who wanted to combine its rugged character with more recreational use.
Market launch in 2026
With the current test programs, Mercedes-Benz appears to be returning to that concept, although the exact positioning and execution remains unclear. The brand emphasizes that, like other G-Class models, the new Cabriolet should offer the recognizable driving feel with which the model has been associated since its introduction. Further information will follow once the development phase is more advanced. The car is expected to enter the market in 2026.
