Maserati MC20 drives 318 km/h, driverless!
AI driver breaks records
The PoliMOVE-MSU team, part of the Politecnico di Milano, developed the AI control software that made this achievement possible. In doing so, the Maserati MC20 surpassed the previous record of 192.8 km/h set in 2022 by an IAC AV-21 race car.
“This goes far beyond a speed record,” said Paul Mitchell, CEO of Indy Autonomous Challenge. “We are pushing AI and robotics to the limit to ultimately make autonomous mobility on highways safer and more efficient.”
From racetrack to record track
The Maserati MC20 already held the record as the fastest autonomous production car at 285 km/h, set in November 2024 at Piacenza Military Airport. With this new test at the LLF facility – a site formerly used by NASA for Space Shuttle landings – the bar has been raised again. Professor Sergio Matteo Savaresi of the Politecnico di Milano explains, “By testing AI systems under extreme conditions, we improve their stability and response time. This ultimately contributes to safer urban mobility.”

The future of autonomous driving
With support from Maserati and the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida, the Indy Autonomous Challenge continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving. Experimenting with AI and robotics will not only set new speed records, but also lay the groundwork for safe and advanced autonomous vehicles on public roads.
