EV Experience 2025: Toyota RAV4 EV is still state-of-the-art

Electric version of popular Toyota RAV4 SUV

In 1995, Toyota began development of the first Toyota RAV4 EV. The RAV4 EV is an all-electric version of the popular RAV4 SUV, with no local emissions. The first prototype of the RAV EV won the Scandinavian Electric Car Rally in August of 1995. In December 1996, Toyota introduced the first generation RAV4 EV. This first generation was only rented or leased between 1997-2003. Still, 328 units were sold to individuals in 2003.

In the fall of 1997, Toyota announced the second generation with no local emissions. The second generation was not introduced in the United States until September 2012. The second-generation RAV4 EV has a top speed of 126 km/h and a range of 153 km.
