Bertone shows new Runabout at Rétromobile 2026

December 29, 2025

Original Runabout

The original Runabout was developed in 1969. At the time, the study model symbolized freedom and experimentation, with a strong focus on form, proportion and emotion. The car was intended as a design statement, not just a functional means of transportation. Ultimately, the original Runabout served as the inspiration for the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Stratos. Incidentally, the 1969 Runabout was a modern recreation of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout that made its debut at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. The car was designed by Marcello Gandini and had under the hood a 1.1-liter four-cylinder from Fiat with 55 hp.

The new Bertone Runabout

The new Bertone Runabout is believed to get a V6 with an output of about 500 hp. Additional technical details are not yet known. Buyers are expected to be able to choose between a Barchetta or Targa. Expect a starting price of around 350,000 euros. According to Bertone, for that amount the buyer gets an open sports car that combines modern technology with coachbuilding and an emphasis on a direct, analog driving experience. The design remains deliberately austere, with simple geometry and a clear balance between form and function.
