Apple CarPlay Ultra: that’s Apple CarPlay but next level!

May 15, 2025

Apple CarPlay Ultra offers deeper integration between iPhone and car

Apple CarPlay Ultra goes a step further than the previous version of CarPlay. The system displays information not only on the center screen, but also on other displays in the car, such as the instrument panel. Among other things, dynamic gauges for speed, RPM, fuel and temperature status appear there. Drivers can additionally choose what information they want to see: navigation from their iPhone, media, or data coming from the vehicle itself, such as tire pressure or driver assistance systems.

Also supports physical buttons

In addition to touchscreen controls, Apple CarPlay Ultra also supports physical buttons and voice commands through Siri. These can be used to control standard functions such as radio and climate control, as well as more advanced vehicle settings such as sound configurations or driving modes. Custom widgets controlled by the iPhone also make an appearance, tailored to the size and shape of the screen or digital cockpit.

Customized for every car brand

Apple designed CarPlay Ultra to accommodate the brand DNA of automakers. Each manufacturer can work with Apple to develop a visual style that fits its own design philosophy. Drivers are also given the ability to customize colors and backgrounds to their liking. Aston Martin is the first brand to go live with this, but other brands are soon to follow. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, for example, have also promised to start working with CarPlay Ultra. Other brands will naturally follow.

Availability and requirements

Apple CarPlay Ultra is available starting today on new Aston Martin models ordered in the United States and Canada. Existing models with the new infotainment system will soon have access via a software update at dealerships. Global rollout to other markets will follow within 12 months. A minimum of an iPhone 12 with iOS 18.5 is required for use.

A brief history of Apple CarPlay

Apple CarPlay was introduced in 2014 as a way to safely and conveniently use iPhones while driving. Instead of taking over the phone screen, CarPlay projects a customized interface onto the car’s infotainment screen, with large buttons and easy access to apps like Maps, Phone, Messages and Music. The goal: fewer distractions and better integration between car and phone.

Since its introduction, CarPlay has been integrated into millions of cars worldwide and has become a popular feature, especially among iPhone users. For those who do not use an Apple device, there is Android Auto: a similar service from Google with virtually the same features, but designed specifically for Android smartphones. Apple CarPlay Ultra builds on this foundation through closer collaboration between Apple and automakers, integrating the system even deeper into the vehicle itself.
