Almost unrecognizable: the new Corolla leaves its benign past behind it
Exciting
That good cars can suddenly become exciting was proven by Toyota a few years ago with the new Prius. That was perhaps the car with the bravest image in automotive history. But the current generation Prius unexpectedly took a different path and was given a tough, sporty look. Now it seems it’s the Corolla’s turn for such a tough makeover.

New Generation
In Tokyo, the Japanese have pulled the curtain off the Corolla Concept. It’s a bold hint at the next generation of one of the world’s best-selling cars, and it looks a lot more exciting than you’re used to. Clean lines, sharp angles and a strikingly low nose with continuous LED lights. It looks more like a sports coupe than a family car.

No grille
The Toyota grille is gone, giving way to a narrow air intake in the bumper. Even the silhouette looks more modern: a slightly sloping roofline, wide hips and an integrated spoiler. Tape off the logo and you’d swear this is a futuristic Lexus.

Interior of the future
Inside, Toyota has tackled things just as thoroughly. No more sea of buttons, but a clean and tidy dashboard with two screens, a floating center console and seats that would not look out of place in a design hotel. Even the gear lever is a work of art and is shaped to the lines of the car.

Something for everyone under the hood
Toyota is keeping the specifications a secret for now, but does give a clear hint: this Corolla should be able to appeal to everyone. Whether you stick to a classic gasoline engine, switch to hybrid or prefer to drive fully electric – it will probably all be possible.
