60 years of Suzuki Netherlands: what happened?

November 21, 2025

History of Suzuki in the Netherlands

Suzuki’s history in the Netherlands began as early as late 1965, when the import contract was signed. A few months later, just after the turn of the year, the first Suzuki motorcycle, the T20, arrived, kicking off six decades of growth, innovation and passion for mobility. Now 60 years later, we are on the eve of the introduction of the Suzuki e Vitara in January 2026.

Ever since the very first T20 motorcycle tore across Dutch roads in 1966 and the first outboard motors cut through the water, Suzuki has been moving generations of Dutch people; on two wheels, four wheels and on the water. From legendary supersports and affordable city cars to eco-friendly Lean Burn outboards: Suzuki has always stayed true to its philosophy of smart, accessible technology that truly makes a difference in everyday life.

Motorcycles: Suzuki’s Dutch adventure began on two wheels

The T20 – also called T20 Super Six – set the tone in 1966: a technological marvel with six gears, two-stroke power and exceptional top speed. From then on, Suzuki grew rapidly to become an icon among motorcyclists.

Highlights from sixty years of motorcycle history:

More recently, Suzuki introduced a new 800cc platform from which the GSX-8S and V-Strom 800, among others, are derived. Suzuki also dominated in racing: world titles in the 500cc class (Kevin Schwantz 1993, Kenny Roberts Jr. 2000), MotoGP successes (Joan Mir 2020) and numerous championships in motocross, supermoto and endurance.

Cars: six decades of innovation and reliability on Dutch roads

In 1969, the first Suzuki car appeared on the Dutch market: the Suzuki Fronte. In the years that followed, Suzuki expanded its model range with models such as the:

This was followed in the 1990s by the Baleno and a new generation Alto, among others, which further strengthened Suzuki’s reputation as a producer of reliable, solid cars. In the 2000s, Suzuki introduced the Wagon R+, Splash and the completely redesigned Swift, which won awards both in the Netherlands and internationally for its economy and design.

The years after 2010 were dominated by innovation. The Vitara returned in 2015 as a modern SUV with advanced safety systems. The contemporary Ignis successfully took the concept of the city SUV to a new level, and the S-Cross offered space and efficiency all in one. In 2019, the legendary Suzuki Jimny returned as a fourth-generation all-rounder. Suzuki capitalized on the trend of hybrid propulsion with the introduction of Smart Hybrid technology, which significantly further reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Suzuki Marine: power and innovation on the water

Suzuki has also built an impressive history on the water. As early as 1967, Suzuki brought outboard motors to the Netherlands. The real breakthrough followed in the 1980s and in the 1990s with the introduction of the DF series. This is Suzuki’s first generation of four-stroke outboard motors. This laid the foundation for cleaner and quieter propulsion.

Highlights quickly followed:

Today Suzuki Marine offers outboard engines from 1.8 to 257 kW (2.5 to 350 hp). In 2024, Suzuki Marine was again the most chosen outboard engine brand in the Netherlands.

Future vision: multi-pathway

At the recently held Japan Mobility Show, the brand already gave a glimpse into the future with a multi-pathway strategy toward cleaner mobility for all product groups. Suzuki auto showed the Vision e-Sky, an all-electric concept car is specially designed for daily use in the city and beyond. Among Suzuki’s motorcycles, the electric e-VanVan is the eye-catcher. This small motorcycle is inspired by the VanVan from the 1970s. Among other things, Suzuki Marine presented a concept of the DF60A FFV. This is an innovative outboard engine suitable for bioethanol with which Suzuki is taking an important step in making boating more sustainable.

Geordy Bloem, Managing Director Suzuki Netherlands: “We are looking forward to 2026 with enthusiasm. Where for motorcycles we are introducing the new SV-7GX, among other things, and in Marine we are expecting a new top model, we are going to take an important step towards even more affordable electric mobility in car. Naturally, we will celebrate sixty years of Suzuki in the Netherlands with great offers and special models. Furthermore, we will continue to invest in our finely meshed car, motorcycle and marine networks, because that is one of the things that makes Suzuki so unique, always being close to the customer. It’s going to be another great year.”
