The iconic Citroën SM is (briefly) back!
A modern ode to the SM
In 2020, DS Automobiles decided to let their designers go wild on an iconic classic: the 1970 DS SM. The result? A series of designs under the name #SM2020, which have now come to life in the form of the SM TRIBUTE.
This concept, now on display at the Concours d’Élégance Chantilly, is not just a retro remake, but a fresh reinterpretation that combines the elegant lines of the SM with modern engineering and design.
Thierry Metroz, head of DS Automobiles Design, describes the project as more than just a tribute: “The SM TRIBUTE shows how we continue the legacy of our iconic models. It is a mix of nostalgia and progress that fits perfectly with what DS Automobiles wants to convey.”
Luxurious, lightweight and a touch quirky
At the time, the original DS SM was a paragon of French innovation with its streamlined shapes, powerful V6 engine and signature hydropneumatic suspension that let you float down the road.
The SM TRIBUTE takes that DNA with it, but with a modern twist.
The car looks graceful and muscular and sits on hefty 22-inch wheels.
Refinement
The interior of the SM TRIBUTE is an ode to the original, but of course with a modern twist.
Think of the classic dashboard with oval instruments, but now equipped with projection displays and a high-tech steering wheel.
Soft tones of ivory leather and Alcantara give the interior a light, luxurious feel, while details like laser-engraved leather and mother-of-pearl finishes provide a sense of sophistication we know from DS.
Concours d’Élégance
At the Concours d’Élégance in Chantilly, visitors can admire not only this modern classic, but also a wide range of other SM models, including some rare versions such as the four-door SM OPERA and the 1974 racing SM that competed in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.
