Review – Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain E 300 de (2024)
Adventurous edge
At Mercedes-Benz, the term “All-Terrain” refers to models with an adventurous edge.
Compare it to Audi’s “Allroad” label and Volvo’s Cross Country.
The recipe is actually quite simple: you take a spacious station wagon as a base and give that model a rougher look and increase the suspension.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate All-Train is no exception.
Compared to the regular E-Class Estate, the All-Terrain is a bit taller.
Its length comes out to (4,950 mm).
The width is 1,904 mm and the height 1,497 mm.
The car comes standard on 235/55 R18 tires with 8J x 18-inch rims.
Optional rims up to 20-inch are available.
The smaller wheel size drives more comfortably, while the larger wheel size provides more dynamics.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain has a number of unique features.
Consider a grille with two slats integrating the famous star.
The slats are finished in iridium silver.
The front bumper has also been modified.
En profil, the dark gray wheel arch trims in matte dark gray stand out.
At the rear, a unique rear bumper stands out. The interior features stainless steel AMG sports pedals and floor mats with “All-Terrain” lettering. Those who open the luggage door will detect loading sill protection in stainless steel look.
Slightly less luggage space for PHEV
And speaking of that luggage space… The battery pack of a plug-in hybrid variant does gobble up some luggage space, as normally an E-Class Estate has a luggage space of 615 to 1,830 liters.
With this plug-in hybrid diesel it is 460 to 1,675 liters.
Still more than enough storage space by the way, but still quite a difference.
Four-cylinder, sometimes just two too few
This test car is an E 300 the 4MATIC All-Terrain.
And that can safely be called a fine powertrain.
At times we do prefer a six-cylinder turbodiesel engine, but even this four-cylinder knows how to get good pace in this adventurous estate.
Especially on the highway – if you cover longer distances – sometimes you would wish for two more cylinders.
Oh well, we too understand that Mercedes-Benz has to downsize in some areas.
While driving, you also notice that this car has a sublime suspension.
That really finishes this car.
It may be slightly higher on its legs, but thanks to Airmatic air suspension, comfort is of an excellent level.
Wonderful chassis
Airmatic air suspension is on both the front and rear axles. This system combines air-sprung bellows with adaptive ADS+ dampers for maximum responsiveness. The characteristics of the dampers are automatically adjusted at each individual wheel in both the input and output phases. The impact of, say, hitting a bump with one tire is not transmitted to the entire axle and interior.
Above all, that makes for a lot of peace and quiet in the car.
This is one of the finest mile-eaters we have ever driven.
Also clever: to reduce drag and thus fuel consumption, the vehicle level is automatically lowered by 15 mm from a speed of 120 km/h in the “Comfort” driving program.

Battery pack and charging
Mercedes-Benz is spooning a 19.6 kWh battery pack into this car, good for a theoretical electric driving range of 109 kilometers. In practice, count on about 70 to 80 kilometers. The car can drive fully electric up to a speed of 140 km/h.
Those who drive electric that faster than 120 km/h will find that the range decreases very quickly.
Electric driving is preferably done at lower speeds.
Charging the battery is very fast: with 3-phase 11 kW alternating current (AC) or 55 kW with direct current (DC).
In the latter case, the battery is recharged from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes, good for 70 electric kilometers.
With an 11 kW charging station, charging takes about two hours.
A multi-talent
As far as we are concerned, this E 300 the 4MATIC All-Terrain is a multi-talent.
It is super comfortable, nicely powerful, beautifully built and extremely spacious.
One distracting factor is the overkill of noises and safety warnings, but that’s true of all car brands these days.
Fortunately, a lot can be turned off, but you will have to do that every time.
Anyway, it is part of these times.
In terms of the car, this Mercedes-Benz is an absolute delight, but for that money it should be.
