Mercedes-Benz EQS gets even bigger battery (118 kWh!)
Mercedes-Benz EQS: from 108.4 to 118 kWh
In the future, customers will be able to travel even more miles without having to stop to charge. Thanks to an increased battery capacity from 108.4 to 118 kWh, the maximum range of the EQS 450 4MATIC is increased from 717 to 782 kilometers according to the WLTP test standard. The EQS 450+ breaks even the 800-kilometer mark with a range of 735-803 km. New to the lineup is the EQS 350. The new entry-level model has a range of 642 to 683 kilometers (WLTP).
Higher braked towing weight
Mercedes-Benz has increased the towing weight for the EQS and EQE Limousines with 4MATIC from 750 to 1,700 kg. Thus, they reach a similar level to SUV derivatives. Customers can now tow a horse trailer, for example.
Another technical measure: due to the high proportion of recovery in daily use, brake discs are used less frequently than in internal combustion engine models. Henceforth, the braking system is maintained by a special function that automatically presses the brake pads against the discs from time to time.
Mercedes-Benz EQS now with star on hood
The hallmark of the Mercedes-EQ models is the deep black grille (Black Panel), which blends seamlessly with the headlights. The designers have now refined this distinctive “face” for the EQS: the electric flagship features a new grille with chrome applications as standard in the Electric Art Line. The chrome-plated and recessed slats provide an elegant contrast to the deep black surroundings. Combined with a standing star on the hood, this grille unites the avant-garde EQ look with the iconic, status-conscious Mercedes-Benz symbol.
The eye for high-quality details is also reflected in the interior: the air outlets on the B-pillars now have a rim of galvanized chrome. The additional cushion in the back has been given a piping of Nappa leather.
Extra comfort in the back for Mercedes-Benz EQS
EQS models equipped with the optional comfort package plus rear with executive seats now have a special angled footrest on the right side. It is placed between the rails of the front seat and significantly increases the comfort for the rear passenger.
Also new in this package are the forward folding front passenger seat and the rear seatback adjustable to 38 degrees. This creates more space. The optional package also includes seat heating plus and rear neck and shoulder heating as well as pneumatically adjustable seat depth. An illuminated trim piece is integrated at the rear of the front seats.
Mercedes-Benz has increased comfort in the rear of the EQS before, for example, the rear seat package has been standard for some time. With the push of a button, the angle of the backrest can be adjusted from 27 to 36 degrees. The layered look of the chair upholstery emphasizes its individual character. A thickly padded backrest and upholstery detached from the side cheeks provide even more seating comfort.
Automatic lane change on two-lane roads
With the “automatic lane change” function, Mercedes-Benz now offers an intelligent further development of SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems in Europe as well. Automatic lane change is supported on highways with two structurally separated lanes with a speed limit of 140 km/h. The 2024 model year EQS has this feature built in at the factory.
Automatic lane change is part of the Distronic active distance assistant with active steering assist. In the case of a slower vehicle ahead, the vehicle can initiate the lane change on its own within a speed range of 80 to 140 mph. If the radars detect enough space and lane markings are recognized, the vehicle can overtake the slower vehicle in front fully automatically. The conditions: it must be a highway with at least two lanes with a speed limit and the vehicle must be equipped with MBUX navigation. The system requires no further input from the driver to perform the automatic lane change. The responsibility for driving the vehicle remains with the driver.
The lane change must therefore be constantly monitored. Mercedes-Benz already offers automatic lane change for some model series in the U.S. and Canada.
Did you know that …
… the MBUX Hyperscreen is now standard on the EQS? In the process, three displays run almost seamlessly into each other, creating a screen border more than 141 cm wide.
… the now standard heat pump increases climate comfort and efficiency? The residual heat from the electric drive (inverter and electric motor) and the HV battery can be used to heat the interior. This greatly reduces the need for battery power for heating and increases range.
… the so-called Disconnect Unit (DCU) in the 4MATIC versions automatically decouples the electric motor on the front axle, depending on the driving situation and the performance required? At low loads, the DCU switches to 4×2 driving mode. Then the electric motor and transmission on the front axle are turned off. This increases the radius of action.
… the recovery level of the EQS has been increased? The greater deceleration (up to 3 m/s2) means more recovered energy and thus greater range. Mercedes-Benz has now also optimized the braking system: it offers better pedal feel thanks to a modified brake force cylinder.
… many updates for the EQS have been made using over-the-air technology (OTA)? These include, for example, Dolby Atmos, the YouTube web app and a digital travel guide.
… maintenance service in Germany is now basically standard on all EVA 2 models (EQS, EQE, EQS SUV, EQE SUV)? This includes all required maintenance up to six years or 90,000 km (whichever comes first). Mercedes-Benz will introduce it in all other European countries in the second quarter of 2024.
… the EQS can be easily started and locked with the Keyless Go convenience package with preparation for the digital vehicle key (standard) if the driver has an appropriate end device? Key-sharing is also possible: family members or acquaintances can be digitally invited to use the vehicle.
… the drivers of an EQS and EQS SUV can get a year of free power at the IONITY charging stations? This applies from activation of IONITY Unlimited via Mercedes me Charge. In total, Mercedes me Charge brings together more than 1.5 million charging points from more than 1,300 charging providers worldwide, making it currently one of the largest public charging networks in the world.
… the other models with the all-electric architecture of the luxury and premium class (EVA 2: EQE, EQS, EQS SUV, EQE SUV) are also going to benefit from many of the improvements outlined in this press release? Sales of those models will also begin in late April 2024.
Ordering
The new Mercedes-Benz EQS can be ordered from the end of April 2024. Despite the improved standard equipment, base prices remain unchanged.
