Brutal: Las Vegas expands police fleet with Cybertrucks

March 4, 2025

Science fiction

The LVMPD announced the donation via Facebook and gave a preview of what the vehicles will look like. With their matte stainless steel bodywork, bullet-proof doors and windows, the Cybertrucks are not a bad choice for a police car – especially in a country where you can buy a gun at the supermarket in addition to milk and bread.

Expensive joke

The Cybertruck is not a cheap vehicle, especially if it has to be converted into a fully operational police vehicle. With sirens, communications equipment and other modifications, the bill runs to about $150,000 each. An amount the average taxpayer would surely question. Fortunately, the LVMPD reports that the city did not pay a dime for this – in fact, the ten vehicles are a donation from a generous millionaire.

RoboCop 2.0

In addition to their striking appearance, the Cybertrucks also have a few gadgets that could come in handy for the police. Think an array of cameras, a sturdy construction that can withstand bullets, and Sentry Mode, which automatically captures suspicious movements. A few Cybertrucks will go to the local SWAT team.

Elon, is it you?

It was initially thought that Elon Musk himself was behind the donation. After all, the billionaire has several business interests in Las Vegas, including his drilling company The Boring Company. Moreover, a fleet of tough police Cybertrucks obviously provides Tesla with good free PR. Because fair is fair, a Cybertruck in police costume just looks cool. Especially in Las Vegas.

But it is now known who the real giver is: Ben Horowitz, a wealthy Silicon Valley investor who runs a large venture capital firm. Why exactly he is giving ten Cybertrucks to Las Vegas police remains a mystery, but millionaires don’t usually hand out free gifts for no reason. Ah yes, America…
