Top 5 best-selling electric cars 2024
1. Tesla Model Y – 19,058 registrations (14.4% market share).
The Tesla Model Y is the absolute winner of 2024. With nearly one in seven newly registered electric cars, Tesla’s family SUV is unstoppable. The combination of ample range, practical interior space and access to the Supercharger network makes this electric SUV hugely popular in the Netherlands. With over 19,000 registrations, it was not only the best-selling EV in 2024, but also the best-selling model regardless of powertrain.
2. Volvo EX30 – 10,802 registrations (8.2% market share)
The Volvo EX30, the newest member of the Volvo family, is an instant hit. The compact SUV offers luxury, safety and sharp design for a relatively reasonable price. Nearly 11,000 Dutch people chose the smallest model from the Chinese-Swedish brand in 2024.
3. Tesla Model 3 – 10,702 registrations (8.1% market share).
The Tesla Model 3 remains a fixture at the top. Despite having been around for several years, this model remains wildly popular. The relatively low entry price, sleek driving characteristics and – there you have it again – the Supercharger network – make the Model 3 an attractive choice for many Dutch EV drivers.
4. Kia Niro – 5,402 registrations (4.1% market share)
The Kia Niro is available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. If you add all variants together, you arrive at 10,914 registrations in 2024, good for a 2.9% market share. But the all-electric Kia Niro EV is also doing very well on its own. With 5,402 registrations and a 4.1% market share, the Niro EV achieves the fourth spot in the top 5 best-selling electric cars of 2024.
5. Volvo XC40 (EX40) – 4,873 registrations (3.7% market share)
Volvo, like Tesla, is doubly represented in this top 5. The Volvo XC40 closes the list. This compact premium SUV is available with various powertrains, but especially the all-electric version – now known as the EX40 – is doing very well. As many as 4,873 units were registered in 2024.
