BMW I8

In 2014, the model range of BMW’s sub-brand i was expanded with the i8: a plug-in hybrid sports car. Nowadays that is not even that special anymore, when it was introduced it certainly is. The i8 has four-wheel drive. The three-cylinder combustion engine drives the rear wheels, the electric motor drives the front wheels.

Fully electric

The i8 may be a plug-in hybrid, but the car also has a driving mode in which the car can drive fully electrically. If the battery is completely empty, the car is only powered by the petrol engine.

roadster

After rumors and a long wait, the time had come in 2017: together with a subtle facelift, the open Roadster version finally appeared. Like the coupé, the Roadster has a chassis made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and the windscreen frame of the Roadster is also made of this. The soft top can be opened or closed up to 50 km/h in 15 seconds.

Production stop

The BMW i8 lasted until mid-2020. Then the model came to the end of its life cycle. There will be no direct successor, but the range of partially and fully electric BMW models will of course be expanded much further.
