After the concept car BMW i Vision Dynamics from 2017 and the BMW Concept i4 from 2020, the fully electric sedan from BMW finally appeared in 2021. Well, sedan, it’s basically a liftback. The car is partly identical to the then new generation BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, with the important difference of course being the fully electric powertrain. It is remarkable that the BMW i4 even runs from the same production line as the 4 Series models with combustion engine.

Large range The BMW i4 has a battery pack of 83.9 kWh, which in this case is good for an impressive range of 590 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. This is partly due to the high efficiency of the powertrain. In this way the engine, transmission and electronics form one whole, which also reduces the weight and number of parts. In addition, the battery has a high energy density: an improvement of up to 40 percent compared to the BMW i3.
First fully electric BMW M model The strongest version of the BMW i4 is the M50 with an output of 400 kW (544 hp). It sprints to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and continues up to 225 km/h. The most special thing about the M50, however, is that it is the very first all-electric BMW M model. It is a ‘half-blood’ M-model. A ‘thoroughbred’ fully electric BMW M4 will probably be some time away.
