All about the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N
Emergence of N
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N embodies Hyundai’s long-standing tradition of providing high-quality mobility along with its sporty, driver-focused N models. The N-label made its debut in the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2014, resulting in multiple world titles. Those successes led to a winner’s mentality that is reflected in the high-performance N models. Now we are ready for the next step where the award-winning IONIQ 5, built on the E-GMP platform, provides the perfect foundation for N’s first all-electric high-performance model.
More N models to come
The IONIQ 5 N is Hyundai N’s latest technological masterpiece. Hyundai N’s experience with the IONIQ 5 N will be reflected in new EVs from the brand in the future, with the strategic goal of increasing Hyundai’s overall competitiveness. The IONIQ 5 N is the first step in this strategic shift, with other new electric N models to follow.
The IONIQ 5 N combines the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), on which the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 are also built, with N’s technologies developed in motorsports. In doing so, it draws on N’s expertise in “driving labs” – such as the RM20e, RN22e and N Vision 74 – to further maximize performance and adhere to N’s three familiar pillars: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability and Everyday Sports Car, or sleek, perfectly balanced machines that are perfectly capable on both public roads and the track.
Reinforced body
For optimum Corner Rascal performance, improvements were made to the body structure, with 42 additional welding points and 2.1 meters of additional adhesive. Powertrain construction has been strengthened, while front and rear subframes have been optimized for lateral stiffness. The drive shafts of the IONIQ 5 N, which Hyundai also uses in the World Rally Championship (WRC), have been further strengthened at both the front and rear. Not only to withstand the enormous torque forces of the electric motor, but also, together with the 21-inch forged alloy wheels, to reduce unsprung mass.
Steering response
To improve steering response and feedback, IONIQ 5 N’s steering column has been reinforced for increased rigidity. In addition, the car received a specially tuned N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system with a higher steering ratio and improved torque feedback. These improvements result in a more direct and communicative steering experience to further enhance driver confidence.
N Pedal
N Pedal was developed as a solution to the weight and size of EVs as well as to provide the responsive driving characteristics of Hyundai’s successful rally car i20 N in the World Rally Championship. This intelligent software feature in the IONIQ 5 N is designed for even better throttle response. Using similar technology as in the regenerative braking system i-Pedal, N Pedal prioritizes fast and exciting cornering over energy efficiency. By using decelerating power, an aggressive weight transfer is created, allowing a corner to be cut even sharper.
N Drift Optimizer
N Drift Optimizer helps maintain drift angle by balancing multiple vehicle controls based on real-time input. The integrated Torque Kick Drift feature allows the driver to mimic the kick action of rear-wheel-drive internal combustion engine vehicles for driving scenarios that require more direct drift initiation. This is the result of advanced electronic control technology.
N Torque Distribution
N Torque Distribution offers fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear wheels and can be adjusted to 11 levels. The electronic limited slip differential (e-LSD) on the rear axle optimizes cornering performance and control. Additional wheel sensors and increased damping power with larger damper sizes increase the performance range of the electronically controlled suspension.
N Grin Boost
The powerful IONIQ 5 N benefits from several technical improvements. The electric motors rev up to 21,000 rpm and deliver 478 kW (650 hp) with N Grin Boost engaged. This is the result of the two-stage inverter with increased energy efficiency for more powerful power output from the new 84 kWh battery.
Several exclusive features support track performance. N Grin Boost maximizes acceleration with a 10-second power increase, and N Launch Control offers three different levels of traction for the fastest possible takeoff, allowing the driver to launch the car like a professional race car. Track SOC (State of Charge) automatically calculates battery consumption per lap.
More efficient heat management
The improved system for more efficient heat management, including modified cooling systems for the electric motor and battery, maximizes IONIQ 5 N’s resistance to performance degradation before and during intense track driving.
N Battery Preconditioning
N Battery Preconditioning pre-sets the temperature of the battery to the most energy-efficient temperature. The battery preconditioning function is split into two modes, “Drag” mode and “Track” mode, for different driving scenarios. ‘Drag’ mode sets the optimal temperature for immediate application of maximum power, while ‘Track’ mode optimizes the lowest possible battery temperature for covering a greater number of laps.
N Race
N Race gives drivers more direct control over the car’s energy consumption, with a choice of “Sprint” or “Endurance” driving. In “Sprint,” the driver can choose whether to tap into the car’s full power. ‘Endurance’ is a setting that maximizes the range of the IONIQ 5 N on the track. This is achieved by limiting sudden power surges that slow down temperature build-up, thereby increasing endurance.
N Battery Preconditioning and N Race are a direct result of Hyundai’s motorsports-based approach to N. It helps drivers efficiently manage energy consumption to maximize car performance or lifespan. This process normally requires equipment and a team of mechanics, but in the IONIQ 5 N it can be done with just a few presses of a button.
Braking system of Hyundai IONIQ 5 N
The IONIQ 5 N features N-tuned brakes that represent Hyundai’s most powerful braking system, with 400 mm diameter front brake discs and four-piston monobloc calipers. Brake discs with a diameter of 360 mm are mounted at the rear wheels. These brakes are made of new lightweight materials and have optimized airflow for cooling. For even better braking performance, the regenerative braking system is also employed in the IONIQ 5 N. This braking system serves as the main source of braking power, while the mechanical brakes provide additional braking power when needed.
G-forces
To meet the tough braking demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Hyundai N engineers designed N Brake Regen: an N-specific brake regeneration system specifically for the IONIQ 5 N. It offers a maximum deceleration force of 0.6 G – an industry-leading value – from regenerative braking alone. Even upon activation of the ABS, the regenerative braking system remains engaged, with a maximum deceleration force of 0.2 G. The risk of brake fade due to the relative weight of the EV is minimized by maximizing the regenerative braking power, resulting in less braking force being applied to the mechanical brakes. By the way, the seamless transition between regenerative and hydraulic braking is little to no noticeable to the driver.
Sporty sound
Sporty electric car drivers often express dissatisfaction with the lack of feedback behind the wheel. That’s why Hyundai engineers developed N Active Sound + and N e-Shift. Both systems provide more feedback to the driver, making the dynamic driving experience even more intense.
N Active Sound +
N Active Sound + consists of a 10-speaker system (8 internal, 2 external) that offers three different sound themes: Ignition, Evolution and Supersonic. Ignition simulates the 2.0 turbo engine of N models with an internal combustion engine, complete with pop and bang sound effects. Evolution represents an electronic sound inspired by the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo Concept and RN22e. Supersonic produces the sound of a fighter jet to give the driver the feeling of a fighter pilot. All sound options are customizable so drivers can tailor them completely to their preferences.
N e-Shift
N e-Shift works closely with N Active Sound + to mimic the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) of N models with an internal combustion engine. The system simulates shifting gears by regulating engine torque and provides shock feel between shifts. The goal is to provide drivers with a more immersive driving experience closer to combustion engine models than EVs.
N Road Sense
Also, the IONIQ 5 N is equipped with N Road Sense, which automatically recommends the activation of N Mode when traffic signs are detected, allowing drivers to make the most of every second of their drive (EU only).
Vehicle-to-Load
Like the IONIQ 5, the N variant of the Hyundai electric is equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). This allows the driver to use the stored energy in the high-voltage battery to charge a variety of devices, such as an e-bike or household appliances, even when the vehicle is turned off.
Design Hyundai IONIQ 5 N
Numerous visual and practical design elements have been added to the exterior of the IONIQ 5 N. Such as contrasting black accents and a wing-shaped rear spoiler that emphasize the sporty aspects of the IONIQ 5 and maximize its potential for track driving.
Features
The N model is further distinguished from the standard IONIQ 5 by modified proportions. It is 20 mm lower overall, 50 mm wider at the bottom (to accommodate wider tires) and 80 mm longer because of the more prominent diffuser. Active air vents at the front of the IONIQ 5 N provide additional cooling, while a spoiler lip under the bumper emphasizes the car’s low and sporty appearance. The Luminous Orange color – reserved exclusively for N-label electric models – at the bottom of the black front bumper continues along the side skirts, giving the IONIQ 5 N an extra track-worthy look. That impression is further enhanced by the 21-inch forged alloy wheels with high-performance 275/35 R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires for improved handling and grip on the track.
Spoilers
For optimum aerodynamic performance, the prominent, wing-shaped N rear spoiler, along with the orange-colored rear diffuser and air outlet, help regulate airflow at the rear. These elements also contribute to sporty styling, as does the triangular N-only HMSL brake light in the spoiler. The IONIQ 5 N is also equipped with a rear window wiper.
Interior Hyundai IONIQ 5 N
The interior of the IONIQ 5 N bears obvious similarities to other members of the N family. Prominently featured on the newly designed N steering wheel is the N logo, flanked by N buttons that allow the desired driving mode to be set and arranged according to the driver’s preference. The driving modes can be customized and assigned to each button in different combinations to enhance the IONIQ 5 N’s driving pleasure. In addition, the N Grin Boost button provides instant and intuitive access to maximize acceleration and driving pleasure, while the shift paddles are positioned to allow the driver to engage N e-shift and N Pedal features with the fingertips.
Knee supports
The center console of the IONIQ 5 N is optimized for track driving with knee supports, shin support and a sliding armrest. Adjustments to the lower part of the console increase rigidity to further support sporty driving. For everyday use, the IONIQ 5 N also offers a wireless charger, cup holders and a USB-C connector.
Bucket seats
The bucket seats in the IONIQ 5 N are positioned about 20 mm lower than in the base model and received reinforced side cheeks to maximize upper and lower body support during sharp turns. N logos on the front and rear of the seats add to the IONIQ 5 N’s appeal.
Position of the pedals
Due to the nature of N-driving, the IONIQ 5 N’s pedals are optimized for foot contact in scenarios where the driver faces oversteer, drifts and power slides on the track. The risk of feet slipping is reduced, and the footrest is also optimized to ensure a stable riding position at all times, even during vigorous braking.
The new checkered-flag theme – a track-inspired variation on the IONIQ 5’s iconic parametric pixels – can be found on the sill panels, aluminum pedals and footrest. These components accentuate the sporty appearance of the IONIQ 5 N.
Also durable
Like the IONIQ 5, the designers applied sustainable materials in the IONIQ 5 N, including recyclable paperette, Bio-PET yarn from sugarcane, yarn from recycled PET bottles, Bio-TPO from sugarcane, eco-friendly processed leather and recycled pigment paint from discarded tires.
