Why Toyota presents this Le Mans racer with hydrogen technology
New hydrogen category
The Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept was presented by Toyota president Akio Toyoda at the press conference of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This is a prototype with a hydrogen combustion engine developed for possible participation in the new hydrogen category of the French race.
Hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion
Recently, the ACO announced that in addition to racing cars with a hydrogen fuel cell, it will also allow cars with a hydrogen combustion engine in the new hydrogen car category. In addition to the possibilities with a hydrogen fuel cell, Toyota is exploring options with hydrogen combustion. In auto racing, hydrogen combustion offers a number of advantages. One in particular is for spectators: the car sounds like a race car.
Already presented
In the Super Taikyu Series in Japan, Toyota is participating with a Corolla with hydrogen combustion engine. During several long-distance races, the technology is put to the test, simultaneously learning a lot for application inside and outside the automotive industry.
