TOP 15: EVs with the greatest range in 2024
WLTP
Before we get to the top 15, a brief explanation of the measurement method we use in Europe for the range of EVs. The range of electric cars has been measured through the WLTP test method since 2018. That replaced the old, outdated NEDC consumption test from 1992. The new WLTP test is much more realistic and real-world oriented, but experience shows that the promised consumption figures can deviate significantly in practice. This article contains the WLTP figures, but take them with a small grain of salt. In practice, an EV quickly gets 50 to 100 kilometers less distance. So an electric car that reaches 600 kilometers on paper is more likely to reach 500 kilometers in practice. All right, let’s start with the list.
15. Polestar 3 111 kWh Dual Motor PlusPilot – 610 kilometers.
We kick off this list with the Polestar 3. We first saw the Polestar 3 in mid-2022, but back then we didn’t know that we would have to wait a long time for this electric SUV. The car has been considerably delayed, but now it is finally known when it will come to the Netherlands. From the second quarter of 2024, the first units will be delivered. The Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor is the version that has the longest breath. Thanks to a 111 kWh battery pack, it can travel 610 kilometers before running out of power. It can fast charge up to 250 kW, allowing you to charge the battery pack to 80% in half an hour.
14. Hyundai IONIQ 6 – 614 kilometers.
You can see from the shape of the IONIQ 6 that it is efficient and will go a long way on a full battery. The lineup of the Hyundai IONIQ 6 consists of several engine variants and equipment levels. First, there is a choice of a 53 kWh or 77.4 kWh battery pack. The 53 kWh battery is good for 429 kilometers and is always rear-wheel drive.
The 77.4 kWh battery pack variant comes with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The action radius topper is the rear-wheel drive version. It gets as far as 614 kilometers on a full charge of electricity. Then you do have to choose the version with 18-inch wheels, by the way.
Oh, and of course don’t forget that of almost all electric cars, the IONIQ 6 can charge the fastest: namely, with a charging capacity of up to 240 kW. As a result, 15 to 20 minutes of charging often gives you enough power to drive another few hundred kilometers.
13. Zeekr 001 Long Range RWD – 620 kilometers
Zeekr, like Volvo, Polestar, Lynk & Co and Lotus, is part of the Chinese Geely group. The brand did not begin delivering its first product, the Zeekr 001, until October 2021. Now you can also get this car in the Netherlands. It is a luxury shooting brake that uses a 100 kWh battery pack. This allows it to get 620 kilometers far on a full charge of electricity. The brand has now opened a large showroom in the former V&D building on the Rokin in Amsterdam, where all the models can be admired.
12. Renault Scenic EV87 – 625 kilometers
The first generation Renault Scenic appeared about thirty years ago, in 1996. Back then it was the Renault Mégane Scénic, a compact MPV. That is different now. The new Scenic is what you would call a C-segment crossover, and it is also fully electric. You can get it with a battery pack with 60 kWh capacity and one with 87 kWh. The large battery pack allows the new Scenic to travel up to 625 kilometers. Fast charging can take it up to 150 kW. It will be at the dealership in the spring of 2024.
11. BMW i7 – 625 kilometers
Modern BMWs make quite a stir when it comes to design. The new 7 Series is one proof of that. Looking beyond the looks, however, it is hard to deny that BMW has built a very impressive EV with the electric 7 Series. In the bottom of this BMW i7 lies a battery pack with a net capacity of nearly 102 kWh. This gives the top electric limousine a range of up to 625 kilometers according to the WLTP test cycle.
The payload is also neat. Thanks to the maximum fast-charging capacity of 195 kW, the battery can be recharged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 34 minutes, making the i7 also very suitable for longer trips.
10. BMW iX – 630 kilometers
At number eight we encounter another BMW. This time the iX. This car is also tasteful in terms of design, but in terms of technology, there is no debate: this car has its act together. It even comes five kilometers farther than the i7 we just discussed. The largest battery you can get in a BMW iX has a capacity of 111.5 kWh. Of that, 105 kWh is actually usable. On paper, it allows you to travel a maximum of 630 kilometers.
Then you have to be able to control your right foot. While the iX may not look sporty, it is lightning fast. The top-of-the-line version is the iX M60. This one boasts 619 hp and 1,015 Nm of torque! The sprint to 100 km/h is on it in just 3.8 seconds. When the battery is empty, you can recharge it quickly: with a quick charger, it can handle up to 200 kW.
9. Tesla Model S – 634 km
After more than a decade, the Tesla Model S is still on the market. This model represented perhaps the definitive breakthrough of the electric car. Even a 2013 Model S still impresses in 2024. Even then, the model had a range of 502 kilometers. Many modern EVs today don’t even reach that. The Model S has received a number of updates over the past few years, so it now kicks it up to 634 kilometers on a full battery. There is also a Longe Range version – which gets about 700 kilometers far – but Tesla does not supply it in the Netherlands. We also mention the Tesla Model 3 right away. If you choose the Model 3 Long Range version now, you’ll get 629 kilometers far. Almost as far as the Model S, in other words.
8. Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV – 634 kilometers
At number six we encounter the first Mercedes-Benz in this list, and it won’t be the last either. Mercedes-Benz goes to great lengths to make their cars as streamlined as possible, making them go extra far on a full battery. The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV offers the luxury of an S-Class in SUV packaging, but all-electric.
The version with the greatest range is the cheapest EQS SUV. That, in fact, is the 450+ variant. This one has the least power – namely 360 hp – which makes it consume the least energy. By cheap, we don’t mean really cheap, by the way, because you have to pay a minimum of 125,000 euros for this base version of the EQS SUV. You do get a battery pack with 108 kWh capacity, which is good for a range of 634 kilometers.
7. Polestar 2 Single Motor Long Range – 655 kilometers.
The Polestar 2 is typically one of those cars where you can see how quickly battery technology has developed in recent years. When the Polestar 2 first came to the Netherlands in 2020, it reached a maximum of 470 kilometers on a battery charge. Meanwhile, the model comes much further, while the battery pack is not much bigger. The current Polestar 2 – which has been on the market since mid-2023 – has a battery with a capacity of 82 kWh, while the 2020 Polestar 2 still had to make do with 78 kWh. Despite the battery being only slightly larger, the car today does not reach a maximum of 470 kilometers, but 655 kilometers. This is due not only to the improved battery pack, but also to the electric motors, which are a lot more efficient. Fast charging, meanwhile, is also a lot better with the Polestar 2: it can now handle up to 205 kW at a fast charger.
6. Mercedes-Benz EQE – 671 kilometers
You can think of the Mercedes-Benz EQE as the electric equivalent of the E-Class. E-Class owners typically drive long distances, so then you have to come up with a strong alternative to lure those customers to an electric car. One way the German brand does this is with the Mercedes-Benz the EQE 350+ Long Range. This version gets as far as 671 kilometers on paper.
The EQE 350+ has a 292 hp electric motor on the rear axle that draws its power from a 100 kWh battery. The car weighs just under 2,300 kilograms, sprints to 100 mph in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 210 mph. Fast charging can be done with a charging rate of up to 170 kW, which can charge the battery from 20% to 80% in about half an hour.
5. Volkswagen ID7 Pro – 700 kilometers
The first examples of the Volkswagen ID7 are now on the road in the Netherlands. Thanks to a 77 kWh battery pack, the ID7 will travel 599 kilometers. With that, it narrowly misses this top 12, but later in 2024 the ID7 will also come to our country as a Pro S. This version features an 86 kWh battery pack, which should allow a range of up to 700 kilometers.
4. Peugeot e-3008 – 700 kilometers
The new Peugeot 3008 also comes as an electric e-3008. It is the first model to feature Stellantis’ brand new STLA Medium platform. This platform accommodates a battery with up to 98 kWh capacity. Like the ID7, this allows the E-3008 to travel up to 700 kilometers. By the way, the base version also has an excellent range. That features a 73 kWh battery and a range of 525 kilometers.
3. Fisker Ocean – 707 kilometers
At number three is the Fisker Ocean. On paper, things are already looking good for the SUV. Indeed, the brand gives a WLTP figure of a whopping 707 kilometers for the Ocean! See, that sounds interesting! Especially since, relatively speaking, it is not even that expensive. In fact, the Ocean comes from just under 44,000 euros. Then you do get a version that gets 465 kilometers far, namely the Ocean Sport version. For just under 59,000 euros there is the Ultra, which gets 690 kilometers far and for 63,590 euros you have the Extreme, which gets 707 kilometers far.
A few more specifications: the Fisker Ocean Extreme has a 113 kWh battery and, thanks to two electric motors, four-wheel drive. The power output, at 475 hp and 696 Nm, is no mean feat. In terms of size, you can compare the Ocean to the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQC. Fisker has opened its first Dutch branch in Rotterdam. By now you can go there for a test drive.
2. Mercedes-Benz EQS – 735 kilometers
Also high up in this top ten list we encounter Mercedes-Benz. The Mecedes EQS – along with the EQS SUV – is the best the German brand has to offer in electric driving. On paper, the EQS allows you to drive from Utrecht to Copenhagen – a drive of over nine hours – without having to find a charger. When it hit the market in 2022, it was the most streamlined car in the world. Thanks to its droplet shape and sloping nose, it has a Cw value of only 0.20.
At its introduction, the EQS was also the electric car with the greatest range. He has since lost that record, as the EQS ranks No. 2 in this top 10. Yet the model has nothing to be ashamed of: in fact, on a full battery charge, it reaches up to 735 kilometers. Fast charging can take it up to 200 kW. It can hold that payload for a long time, allowing you to recharge for about 300 kilometers within 15 minutes.
1. Lucid Air – 883 kilometers
Then we come to the No. 1 in this top 10. The car with the greatest range is an American. It is not a Tesla model, but it is the Lucid Air. This sedan, thanks to a 118 kWh battery pack, will travel 883 kilometers on paper. You must then choose the Dream Edition Range. This is a limited-edition in honor of the introduction of the Lucid Air in Europe.
By the way, don’t think now that this version gets this far because it has little power and can’t go hard. He can do just that. In fact, it boasts – shocker – 946 horsepower! If you still don’t think that’s enough, you can also opt for the Dream Edition Performance. This one gets 861 kilometers far, but boasts 1,126 horsepower. By the way, the Performance and Dream versions both have the same price tag, at 220,000 euros. So not tender.
