Review – BMW iX2 xDrive30 (2024), stand out like this!

April 19, 2024

BMW X2 also 100% electric: the BMW iX2

The new X2 is striking anyway, just like its predecessor. An important difference is that the X2 will now also come with battery-electric powertrain. Not very surprising since the technically identical BMW X1 also comes in multiple powertrain flavors. As BMW iX2 – as the electric variant is called – comes in two flavors. Which ones they are, we are happy to explain to you.

What do you get for your pennies?

The BMW iX2 starts at just under 50,000 euros. In that case, you get the keys to the BMW iX2 eDrive20, without M Sport package. This car has front-wheel drive, a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor and a 66.5 kWh battery, good for a range varying from 439 to 478 kilometers according to the WLTP test standard. This car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. By the way, the BMW X2 is also available as a mild-hybrid and as an extra-potent M35i xDrive with 300 hp. A diesel engine with 150 hp is even available: the BMW X2 sDrive18d.

BMW iX2 xDrive30

We drive the BMW iX2 xDrive30. The ‘xDrive’ designation already gives away that this is an all-wheel drive version. The base price of this engine variant is around 60,000 euros, still without M Sport package. Thanks to two electric motors, this version delivers 230 kW (313 hp) and the 0-100 sprint takes only 5.6 seconds. The battery size is the same as that of the eDrive20: that is, 66.5 kWh. In this case, that gives a range of 417 to 449 kilometers on paper. In practice, count on 280 to 350 kilometers.

fast charging

Each BMW iX2 can fast charge with up to 130 kW, recharging the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 29 minutes. With 11 kW charging from 0 to 100 percent, you are 6.5 hours away.

Prices run briskly

With some options, prices can rise sharply. This particular one, for example, has a price tag of nearly 77,000 euros. That’s a lot of money. How is that possible? Options are pricey. The M Sport package will cost you 4,000 euros. A panoramic glass roof: 1,421 euros. BMW still charges 2,114 euros for Driving Assistant Professional. In addition, you will pay 3,494 and 1,496 euros for the Innovation Pack and Comfort Pack, respectively. You thus tick off more than 14,000 euros worth of options. You have to want that, because for 77,000 euros you can have other – much larger – battery-electric cars with more range. This BMW has to rely mostly on its looks.

BMW iX2

A first?

The new BMW iX2 xDrive30 comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels. The optional alloy wheels are available in sizes ranging from 18- to 21-inch, the latter wheel size being a first for a compact BMW model.

Sports Activity Coupe

The new BMW X2 has a striking and expressive design that clearly distinguishes it from the BMW X1. Compared to its predecessor, the new BMW X2 is 194 millimeters longer, with 4,554 millimeters in length overall. Width increased by 21 millimeters to 1,845 millimeters and height by 64 millimeters to 1,590 millimeters. In addition, the longer wheelbase and extra track width provide more interior space, both on the five seats and in the luggage compartment.

Luggage space BMW iX2

The new BMW X2 has a boot volume of 560 to 1,470 liters, depending on the model variant. The BMW iX2 offers 525 to 1,400 liters of luggage space.

Sometimes a little searching

Other than that, the ergonomics are okay, it could be better. Everything is hidden in the infotainment system. You do have some shortcuts, but it’s always searching for the function you want. Moreover, you have to get out of your chair to reach the touch screen with your finger. Furthermore, the infotainment system has quite a learning curve. You really have to get used to how everything works. You also have three hotkeys to the left of the screen, only they just fall away behind the wheel. So you always have to get out of your chair.

BMW iX2 has pleasant suspension

What’s good? The BMW X2 and therefore the iX2 has very nice seats, a great sound system and a pleasant suspension. The car weighs 2,095 kilograms, but you don’t feel it. A strong feature of this BMW. However, the steering does feel too light. Here we would prefer to see a little more feedback.

Driver assistance systems

Standard and optional assistance systems for automated driving and parking provide greater comfort and safety on both daily trips and longer journeys. Standard features include the latest version of Front Collision Warning, Cruise Control with braking function, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning with reverse steering. Parking Assistant with a rearview camera and reversing assistant are also standard. Fortunately, mandatory driver assistance systems such as speed alert and Lane departure warning can be easily disabled. Tip: do this before departure. Saves a lot of bells and whistles along the way.

Many things optional

The range of optional systems includes Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Active Navigation, Exit Warning, the BMW Head-up Display, Surround View, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive Recorder and Remote Theft Recorder. Remote Software Upgrades allow existing features to be enhanced even after purchase. It is even possible to add new features. Augmented View is optionally available for the BMW Maps navigation system based on cloud data.

Conclusion review BMW iX2

The BMW iX2 – as well as the normal BMW X2 – is a car that stands out. As a battery-electric car, the model convinces with its performance and pleasant chassis, but its range is somewhat disappointing in some respects. Then again, that has mostly to do with its price. With options, this BMW is quite pricey. So you have to do something to get noticed. In terms of driving, this BMW iX2 definitely does not disappoint. See and know more?
