Car of the Year 2023 finalists

The seven finalists in the Car of the Year 2023 election are the Jeep Avenger, Nissan Ariya, Renault Austral, Volkswagen ID.Buzz, Kia Niro, Peugeot 408 and Subaru Solterra/Toyota bZ4X. Jeep, Nissan, Volkswagen and Subaru/Toyota are all fully electric cars. Kia delivers the Niro in Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and Electric flavors. The list of finalists clearly shows that the transition to electric mobility is an accomplished fact.

Requirements Car of the Year

The Car of the Year election – known in the Netherlands as Car of the Year – is awarded each year to a model that scores highest in a number of areas. To enter the election at all, the car must have been marketed in at least five European countries in at least the past 12 months.

Assessments in various areas

A simple round of voting results in a shortlist of seven models. These were rated on design, comfort, safety, consumption, driveability, performance, functionality, environmental impact and price. Which car wins is determined by judges who may distribute 25 points each to a minimum of five cars from the list, with a maximum of 10 points per car. One car may have the highest score.

Final ballot

A final round of voting will take place in January. The total of 61 judges look, among other things, at the innovative concept behind the car, what powertrains the model is available with, how practical the cars are and, of course, driving characteristics. The winner will then be announced on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Brussels Motor Show.

Car of the Year, since 1964

The European election of “Car of the Year” has existed since 1964 and is the most important car award in Europe. In 2019, the electric Jaguar I-PACE walked away with the win. In 2020, the Peugeot 208 won. In 2021 and 2022, these were the Toyota Yaris and Kia EV6, respectively.
