Opel Astra GSe and Astra Sports Tourer GSe: these are them!

September 28, 2022

At one time, the Opel GSe label was an abbreviation for “Grand Sport Einspritzung” (Grand SportInjection), as with the Opel Commodore GS/E and the Opel Monza GSE. Now GSe is making a comeback as a sub-brand for Opel’s sporty models, with GSe standing for “Grand Sport electric.

Opel an all-electric brand from 2028

“The new Astra GSe and the new Astra Sports Tourer GSe are the ideal cars to launch our sporty new sub-brand with. Moreover, they fit completely into our strategy of being an all-electric brand from 2028,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.

Powertrain

Okay, nice power so? At least 300 hp? Well, I guess not. The powertrain of the new Opel Astra GSe and Opel Astra Sports Tourer GSe kick up to 225 hp (165 kW) with maximum torque of 360 Nm. Performance figures have yet to be communicated by Opel.

Suspension Opel Astra GSe

We already know that the suspension is lowered by 10 millimeters and they get a stronger braking system. The front and rear suspension’s oil-filled shock absorbers offer additional sportiness. The dampers feature FSD (Frequency Selective Damping), allowing different damping characteristics at high frequencies (suspension control) versus low frequencies (body control). ESP settings are also exclusive to GSe models, with the activation threshold adjusted upward to accommodate the driver’s dynamic driving.

Design Opel Astra GSe

Features of the Opel Astra GSe include 18-inch alloy wheels – inspired by those of the acclaimed and all-electric Manta GSe concept -, a specific front bumper and the GSe emblem on the tailgate. In the interior, the sporty ambitions are further underlined by the Alcantara-clad front sports seats. These chairs also have AGR certification. So they are good for the back.
