Honda comes out with electronic clutch for motorcycles

October 10, 2023

This is a so-called E-Clutch. This operates the clutch with an electric motor. Both when pulling away from a standstill, when shifting gears and when decelerating to a stop. So does the long-available Honda DCT automatic transmission, right? Yes certainly, but the E-Clutch is also possible on a Honda motorcycle with normal foot shifting.

E-Clutch goes beyond quickshifter

Of course, you already know automatic clutch in motorcycles with quickshifter. Then squeezing the clutch lever is also not necessary during upshifts and downshifts. With the E-Clutch, you also don’t have to manually disengage at idle, this system will do that for you. Just as it happens with an automatic. Except that on the motorcycle with E-Clutch, you continue to shift gears yourself with the usual foot pedal.

World first

The system is the world’s first automatic clutch system for motorcycle gearboxes. The Honda E-Clutch uses electronics for instant and sensitive clutch control. Honda commented, “This allows you to enjoy optimal performance in situations where drive power changes, such as starting, stopping and shifting. In addition, starting and shifting are smoother than with a manual, rider-operated clutch.”

Manual operation remains possible

If you wish, you can also operate the clutch in a conventional, manual manner with the clutch lever on the steering wheel. This makes the system accessible to many different riders who, regardless of their level of experience or skill, can fully focus on driving pleasure with increased comfort.

Also retrofitting

The lightweight, compact system can also be installed with only minimal modifications on pre-existing engines. Honda has gradually set the goal of integrating the E-Clutch on its FUN engines
