Classic of 250,000 euros goes up in flames

February 21, 2022

quiet sunday

It is Sunday afternoon, dry with a sun and not too cold. The perfect conditions for a round in my classic, the owner of the Maserati 3500 GTi must have thought. Not knowing that the afternoon would turn out completely different than expected. The oldtimer completely burns out in the middle of a road in Bavel. The fire brigade was quickly on the spot, but to no avail, NOS reports. It was not easy to put out the fire, because leaking fuel from the tank kept the car burning. The wreckage was towed away by a salvage company.

The Maserati

The Italian classic is a 1963 Maserati 3500 GTi. The 3500 series was an attempt for Maserati to enter the Gran Turismo market with a sporty coupé. Maserati did not do that without merit, with more than 2,000 copies sold. The 3500 GTi was introduced in 1960 and was the first Italian production car to have an injection engine. The six-in-line produced 250 hp and was linked to a five-speed gearbox. The car had air conditioning and disc brakes, which was quite special for the time. It was therefore a car for the stars. For example, the Prince of Monaco had one, as did several actors. Even car crazy Jay Leno has a light blue one in his collection .

Price

The Maserati 3500 is not a cheap old-timer. Many have already been sold for more than 200,000 euros. The fact that this car is a GTi makes it more special and more expensive. Similar models are currently offered for more than 250,000 euros. One thing is for sure, this one will no longer yield that much…
