BMW 6 series gran coupe

The first generation BMW 6 Series saw the light of day in 1976. The car was the successor of the E9 Coupé and, like its predecessor, was only available as a coupé. The 6 Series was technically related to the flagship 7 Series and was more or less the coupé version of that car. In addition to sporty performance, the 6 Series also offered a lot of luxury. Production of the 6 Series stopped in 1989, when the car was succeeded by the slightly larger and more expensive 8 Series.

Reintroduction

After the 8 Series had lasted until 1999, BMW no longer offered a large coupe for a while. Until 2003, when it re-introduced a 6 Series. In fact, the model continued where the first generation left off: sporty luxury. However, the car was now based on the technology of the 5 Series. For the first time, the 6 Series was also available as a convertible. In 2011, a change of guard followed with the third generation 6 Series, which was also available as a four-door Gran Coupé from 2012 onwards.

moved up

In 2018, history repeated itself. The 6 Series was followed by the slightly larger and more luxurious 8 Series, although the 8 Series this time is a more direct evolution of the 6 Series. In other words: the 6 Series is now called 8 Series, now that the model is positioned more emphatically as a coupé alternative to the 7 Series. Yet there is still a 6 Series in the showrooms, because the successor to the 5 Series Gran Turismo went through life from 2017 as the 6 Series Gran Turismo. That model also moved up a step in the model range.
