What’s new about the BMW 4 Series Coupe and 4 Series Convertible?
Here’s how to recognize the updated BMW 4 Series
The worldwide market launch of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible will take place in March 2024. But how will you recognize the updated models? Specific design features of the BMW 4 Series include the modified front end with sleek LED headlights and vertical BMW kidney grille. The air intakes of the forward-tilted grille have a mesh structure, both in standard trim and with the M Sport package. The frame is now finished in matte chrome. The headlights have been improved both visually and functionally. The LED units have been redesigned, with low and high beam using the same LED module. A pair of vertical and slightly arrow-shaped LED units make up the daytime running lights and turn signals.
M Sport Package
The M Sport package gives BMW models an even more dynamic appearance. A diffuser element in the rear bumper is now finished in high-gloss black. The exhaust tailpipes, integrated left and right into the rear bumper, have grown from 90 to 100 mm in diameter.
More headlight news!
Adaptive LED headlights with anti-glare matrix high beam are optional. These headlights are identified by the blue inlay and feature city lights and cornering lights. The prism structure of the city light provides a striking contrast to the uniform appearance of the daytime running lights. As part of the M Sport package Pro and in combination with the adaptive LED headlights, M Shadowline headlights with dark housing are also available. Combined with the optional Comfort Access, the headlights generate a Welcome Light Animation when the driver with the key is three meters from the car.
Laserlight taillights
The adaptive LED headlights also come with expressive Laserlight taillights. This technology debuted on the high-performance BMW M4 CSL and is now being applied to a volume model for the first time. In the new BMW 4 Series models, laser diodes illuminate a fiber-optic beam, giving the taillights a complex graphic light display. The lines of the three-dimensional Laserlight gives the taillights an exclusive and unmistakable design.
New body colors and alloy wheels
The redesigned BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible are available with a choice of two solid colors and eight metallic body colors. New to the lineup are the colors Cape York Grün metallic and Fire Rot metallic. In addition, a wide range of BMW Individual body colors and BMW Individual special body colors is available. A range of new alloy wheels has also been added to the offering, including three 19-inch M wheels in double-spoke styling in Jet Black or a Bicolor finish. There are also new light-alloy BMW Individual wheels with Y-spoke styling in Midnight Grey.
Interior and equipment
Standard sports seats and newly designed steering wheels make the driving experience in the BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible even more intense. The large BMW Curved Display provides a fresh and modern interpretation of the driver focus typical of BMW. Standard equipment is enhanced with Ambiance lighting and power folding door mirrors. The range of optional equipment has been restructured for even more targeted personalization. New leather-clad steering wheels with a more modern and sporty design, illuminated multi-function buttons and shift paddles are also available. The M Sport package includes an M Sport steering wheel with a three-spoke design, a flattened underside and a subtle 12 o’clock marker.
Detailed changes to the dashboard and digital climate control
The updated BMW iDrive with QuickSelect provides improved control of ventilation and climate control. Setting the temperature, ventilation intensity and – if applicable – steering wheel and seat heating is now adjustable by touch via the BMW Curved Display or by voice command via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New controls for the air outlets in the dashboard allow the airflow to be adjusted as desired with rotary and tilt movements. Standard Ambiance lighting now includes contour lighting integrated into the edge of the central air outlets. As with the lighting in the footwells, the storage compartment in the front part of the center console and the door handles, the color and brightness of the light can be adjusted to personal preferences. There are nine colors to choose from.
Sensatec seat upholstery
The standard sports seats are combined with interior surfaces in perforated Sensatec. The optional Vernasca leather upholstery with decorative stitching is now available in the new Bicolor variant black/red. Both the BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible can be ordered with BMW Individual Merino leather in three colors.
Drive
The engine range for the BMW 4 Series models includes four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and electrification in the form of 48V mild hybrid technology. An 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission is standard for all models. M Performance models feature six-in-line engines under the hood. Depending on the engine variant, this power is put on the road via rear-wheel drive or BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.
Mild hybrid technology
The six-in-line engines and four-cylinder diesel engine feature 48V mild hybrid technology, for more direct power delivery and added efficiency. A 48V starter generator provides 8 kW (11 hp) of extra power at the slightest touch of the accelerator pedal. This electric boost provides additional dynamic acceleration from standstill and during intermediate acceleration, as well as support at constant speed. The mild hybrid system regenerates energy during braking and deceleration. Energy is stored in a 48V battery that powers both the starter generator and the regular 12V system. This also makes the BMW’s power consumers work even more efficiently.
Driver assistance systems
In terms of automated driving and parking, the BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible are equipped as standard with Front Collision Warning with braking intervention, Cruise Control with braking function, Speed Limit Info with recognition of overtaking prohibitions, manual Speed Limit Assist and Lane Departure Warning with steering corrections. The Driving Assistant Professional Pack with Steering and Lane Control Assistant is optional, as is Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, automatic Speed Limit Assist, route-dependent cruise control and traffic light recognition. Automated parking and coasting is possible thanks to the standard Parking Assistant, including a rearview camera and the Reversing Assistant. Parking Assistant Plus with Park View, Panorama View and Remote 3D View is optional.
BMW Operating System 8.5
The BMW 4 Series is equipped with the improved BMW iDrive display and control concept with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 8.5. The latest generation BMW iDrive with a redesigned home screen and QuickSelect for quick access to frequently used functions guarantees intuitive and easy operation of all functions and access to innovative digital services. The enhanced BMW iDrive forms a whole with the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, making it entirely focused on touchscreen use or operation via natural speech. The control concept also includes multi-function buttons on the steering wheel and – optionally – the BMW Head-Up Display.
BMW Maps navigation system now with Augmented View
The cloud data-based BMW Maps navigation system is part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus. The system makes it even easier to enter a destination and can also provide additional information while driving. A new feature is Augmented View, which, like the BMW Head-Up Display, is part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional. With Augmented View, the map view of the navigation on the Control Display or instrument cluster is supplemented with tips and information appropriate to the situation. It also provides parking search support by displaying additional information.
Personal eSIM and 5G network
Customers of the BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Convertible can always activate the Personal eSIM in addition to the integrated SIM card, for use of the 5G network. When contracting for a Personal eSIM, customers can easily use their smartphone’s connectivity functions in the BMW, even if the smartphone is left at home. It is also possible to stream data via the WiFi Hotspot. All smartphone functions can be controlled via the BMW iDrive system or the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, in all countries where BMW Connected Drive services are available. Some features are outside the contract and may incur additional costs.
The M Performance models
The M Performance models of the BMW 4 Series are available with gasoline and diesel engines, both with a capacity of 3.0 liters. The distinctive M performance of these six-in-line engines is made possible thanks in part to the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology adapted to the specific engine. Standard equipment includes an M Sport suspension with Variable Sport Steering, a very fast-shifting 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, an M Sport brake system and the M Sport differential.
Various design features allow the dynamic character of the M Performance models to be expressed in the best possible way, such as the BMW kidney grille with high-gloss black surround, horizontal slats and M logo. All elements in the front bumper previously finished in Cerium Grey are now finished in high-gloss black, more in line with the look of the high-performance BMW M4 models. At the rear of the M Performance models, trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes in high-gloss black make the potent power under the hood immediately apparent.
