LPG installation

In most cases, an LPG system is retrofitted to a gasoline-powered car. When installing an LPG system, an additional tank is added to the car in or under the luggage compartment. Whether it makes sense to have your car converted we tell you here.

Ex-factory

However, there are also car manufacturers that provide an LPG car ex-factory. The best-known example of this is Dacia. Some Dacia models are available with a Bi-Fuel powertrain, which likes both gasoline and LPG. For example, the new Dacia Jogger.

Benefits LPG

An advantage of driving on LPG is that CO2 emissions are lower compared to gasoline and diesel. Another advantage is that an LPG is often a lot cheaper than these fuels. So if you drive a lot, you will soon be cheaper with an LPG system. In addition, because you are using an economical form of fuel, you may simply drive in environmental zones.

Disadvantages LPG

One disadvantage of driving on LPG is that the installation must be purchased. Including installation costs, you will soon spend 1,500 to 3,000 euros. So when looking for an LPG car, it is smart to look for used models that already have an LPG system.

Road tax LPG car

You also pay more road tax for an LPG car and the consumption of an LPG car is 15% higher than that of a gasoline car. Some parking garages also do not allow parking with an LPG car. Modern LPG systems are safe, yet some parking garages ban these types of cars.

Fueling

Another major disadvantage is that not all gas stations in the Netherlands sell LPG. Only manned gas stations are allowed to offer LPG, and even they do not all offer LPG. Also, the price difference between gas stations is large. In the ANWB Onderweg app, you can find out which gas stations sell LPG and at what price.

LPG fueling abroad

In foreign countries, it is also not easy to fill up with LPG. Be sure to carry the proper reducers for your LPG system, as some countries use a different filling gun. Also note whether your LPG car is allowed to drive through all tunnels. For example, an LPG car is not allowed on the car train from France to England through the Channel Tunnel.

The list of disadvantages is longer than that of advantages, but of course the price advantage makes up for a lot. With the proper research on fueling, you can quickly get cheaper if you really do a lot of miles.
