Volkswagen ID. Buzz OvDG: this is the hippest ambulance in the Netherlands!
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz can be seen in more and more locations in the Netherlands. It’s safe to say: the hip electric bus is a huge success. You already see them in various shapes and designs. This one is extra special. Indeed, this Volkswagen ID.Buzz is UMCG Ambulance Care’s newest toy. It is an Officer on Duty Medical (OvDG) vehicle. UMCG Ambulance Care enters the ID. Buzz testing as an emergency response vehicle.
From first aid to home visit
UMCG Ambulance Care brings good care to people in Drenthe and part of Friesland. Because that care consists of multiple facets, UMCG Ambulance Care is currently conducting an extensive trial of the ID. Buzz, to explore what kinds of tasks Volkswagen’s electric bus can be used for.
“Among other things, we are currently testing it as an OvDG vehicle. At the same time, we are also investigating its qualities as a GP vehicle for our sister MAI Medical Services, for house and site visits in the region,” explains Ben Hendriks, mobility coordinator and ALS ambulance driver at UMCG Ambulance Care.
Bells and whistles
For this practical trial, UMCG Ambulance Care has an ID. Buzz passenger version deployed, supplied by Volkswagen dealer Century which Visser – the conversion specialist of emergency vehicles in Leeuwarden – literally and figuratively fitted with all the bells and whistles. Thus, the ID. Buzz exterior in an ambulance wrap and is equipped with the necessary optical sound signals, communication equipment and, of course, the familiar blue ambulance lights.
What is special about the latter is that a new technology has been used for it, where the lighting is now placed inside the car, behind the front, side and rear windows, instead of on the roof, so that the ideal streamline of the ID. Buzz ambulance is not disrupted.
