Volkswagen ID.AERO is an electric Passat with more than 600 km of range
Global
Next year, Volkswagen will introduce its first all-electric sedan. The brand is showing a study model now, but a production version will be launched in the second half of 2023. First in China, but soon after in Europe as well.
EIA
The study model is almost five meters long and has a streamlined design. Thanks to a sloping roofline, the sedan has a low drag coefficient of 0.23. The ID. Aero is on the same MEB platform as the current ID models. Underneath lies the familiar 77 kWh battery pack, which the brand claims will allow the electric sedan to reach up to 620 kilometers on a single battery charge. An ID.4 – a tall SUV – gets no further than 520 kilometers with the same battery pack.
No door handles
Volkswagen is not releasing much more information yet. They do inform us that the study model sits on 22-inch wheels and that the door handles have been replaced with illuminated touch surfaces that reduce drag. Whether that will make it into the production version remains to be seen. The same goes for the illuminated VW logo that sits on its nose. This is prohibited in Europe, but not in China. We will most likely see the extended LED strip on the front on the production version. In Emden, Germany, the European models are expected to roll off the assembly line in 2023.
